Nicolas Cage's mansion on verge of collapse: Pictures of the massive sinkhole

Crews racing to stabilize the coastline after collapse cut off access to 31 oceanfront homes

More than a week after a massive sinkhole tore open beside Nicolas Cage ’s Malibu home, the threat hasn't disappeared.

The crater remains a major concern for residents along Sea Level Drive, where the collapse damaged the private roadway, disrupted utilities and left dozens of oceanfront homes dependent on emergency stabilization work.

Aerial images show the scale of the damage: broken pavement, exposed soil and a deep void running close to Cage ’s $10.5 million beachfront property, with heavy machinery positioned around the site as crews continue working.

The sinkhole first opened around 5:45 a.m. on September 8. Officials estimated it at roughly 25 to 30 feet deep and about 30 by 60 feet wide. Cage , 62, bought the home in 2024.

Collapse affected more than one celebrity property

The immediate problem was not limited to Cage ’s mansion. The road failure cut off normal access to 31 homes in the gated community, prompting evacuation orders after officials determined emergency vehicles could no longer safely reach the properties.

Seven homes were red-tagged because of structural concerns, while another 24 were affected primarily by the loss of emergency access. The collapse also damaged utility infrastructure and triggered a gas leak, forcing gas and water service to be shut off in the area.

Adding to the concern, emergency crews had already responded to a gas main break at the same property on September 6, two days before the road gave way. No injuries were reported, and Cage wasn't believed to have been at the mansion when the collapse occurred.

Coastal erosion remains the central concern

Officials have linked the sinkhole to severe coastal erosion rather than any single structural failure.

Powerful surf, high tides and waves associated with Hurricane Marie are believed to have washed away soil beneath the roadway, weakening the ground until it could no longer support the surface above.

That has left engineers and geologists with a difficult task. Crews are working to stabilize the area, protect nearby foundations and install temporary erosion controls before any permanent repair can begin.

The longer-term plan is expected to include filling the crater and rebuilding the damaged roadway, but the immediate priority remains preventing further collapse.

Cage ’s home itself is a large oceanfront property built in the 1990s, with expansive glass walls, multiple bedrooms, a chef’s kitchen, elevator access and a rooftop deck overlooking the Pacific.

Footage from the area suggested renovation work was already underway before the sinkhole opened.

The incident has also revived jokes online about Cage ’s unusual real-estate history, including his former ownership of New Orleans’ LaLaurie Mansion, a property long tied to ghost stories and “curse” folklore.

The danger is real enough with a vulnerable coastline, unstable ground and a neighborhood still waiting to see whether the worst is over.
