S tevie Wonder is facing a legal conflict affecting his personal life. The legendary 76-year-old musician has filed a lawsuit to evict Carmen Efferson, his former fiancée, from a home he owns in Los Angeles where she has been living for nearly four decades without paying rent. The agreement that allowed the woman to live there since 1988 was verbal , but the relationship between them has deteriorated following a disagreement related to access to the house.

According to court documents cited by U.S. media , the artist claims that Efferson breached the terms of that agreement by refusing to allow inspectors to enter who were supposed to inspect the property in order to update and maintain the insurance policy. The refusal allegedly caused the coverage to be canceled, which, according to the lawsuit, left the property exposed to potential financial losses.

An insurance inspection breaks a nearly 40-year agreement

The conflict dates back to July 2026 , when Wonder's legal team informed Efferson that an inspector was scheduled to visit the home on the 30th to carry out an insurance-related inspection. Two days after receiving the notice, the woman replied by email that she felt harassed and that she did not consent to entry onto the property.

The refusal triggered a series of communications between both parties. On July 28, the singer's lawyers notified her that she had 30 days to vacate the home. However, Efferson did not leave within the established period, so the legal team continued with the demands to recover the property.

The musician is requesting that the verbal agreement allowing his ex-fiancée to live in the house be terminated , in addition to seeking her eviction, payment of legal expenses, and compensation of up to $600. The ruling will now depend on the judicial proceedings.

The home is located in a residential area of Los Angeles and has been Efferson’s residence since the late 1980s. What for decades was an arrangement that allowed her to live there without paying rent has turned into a legal dispute that threatens to put an end to that situation.
