The day Dolly Parton turned Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving halftime show into one of the NFL's best performances

At 77, the country icon turned a short NFL performance into one of the most talked-about moments of the holiday

Dolly Parton didn't need a Super Bowl-sized production to own an NFL stage. On Thanksgiving Day in 2023, she needed six minutes, four songs and one outfit that immediately became part of football folklore.

The country music icon stepped onto the field at AT&T Stadium during halftime of the Dallas Cowboys ’ game against the Washington Commanders wearing a sparkling version of the Cowboys cheerleader uniform in front of roughly 93,000 fans. The reaction was instant.

Parton opened with “Jolene,” followed with “9 to 5,” then closed with Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” both featured on her Rockstar album. It was a compact set, but nothing about it felt small.

Parton understood the moment

The outfit became the biggest talking point, but Parton later made clear that she understood the risk.

“I thought, ‘Well at my age, if I can pull it off, it’s going to be good. And if I don’t, I can just pass it off as an old woman doing a stupid ass thing,’” she told USA Today.

She added: “I’ve always said my desire to do something is greater than my fear of it.”

That attitude helped carry the performance when part of the staging reportedly failed. Parton was expected to rise through a silver star-shaped platform, but the mechanism did not function as planned. She simply kept going.

The crowd barely seemed to notice, and the show never lost momentum. The performance quickly became a national talking point, helped by CBS analyst Tony Romo , whose enthusiastic reaction on the broadcast spread across social media.

The timing was also perfect. Rockstar had been released only days earlier, and the Cowboys appearance gave Parton a massive platform to perform material tied to the album while also kicking off the Salvation Army’s annual Red Kettle Campaign .

Dallas then completed the afternoon with a dominant 45-10 victory over Washington, with Dak Prescott throwing four touchdown passes.

Still, by the end of the day, one of the biggest stories had happened during halftime.

Football connection felt natural

The Cowboys show wasn't Parton ’s only major football appearance that year. Days earlier, Peyton Manning escorted her onto the field at Neyland Stadium, where she performed “Rocky Top” during Tennessee’s game against Georgia.

“My East Tennessee roots run deep, and I am so proud to be partnering with the Vols,” Parton said at the time.

She had also worked with ESPN and the University of Tennessee on football-related projects, while the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame had previously named her Tennessean of the Year.

That broader connection helps explain why the Cowboys performance still stands out years later.

It wasn't simply a celebrity cameo. It was Parton doing what she did throughout her career in taking a huge stage, leaning fully into the moment and making it feel unmistakably her own.
