Meghan Markle 's half-brother has become the focus of an unexpected development in the investigation involving their father, with Philippine authorities now examining whether Thomas Markle Jr. has any connection to alleged criminal activity involving minors.

The 60-year-old initially approached investigators after claiming to have discovered suspected child sexual abuse material among belongings associated with his father, Thomas Markle Sr. , at a property in Cebu.

However, Philippine Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla announced on Thursday, November 5, that investigators had received additional witness information concerning the younger Markle, prompting authorities to expand their inquiries.

The development has raised fresh questions about the investigation, although officials emphasized that Thomas Jr. is currently considered a person of interest rather than a criminal suspect.

"There are signs that point that the son is involved in the crime as well but only as a person of interest so far," Remulla told reporters.

Neither Thomas Jr. nor his father have been found responsible for the alleged offenses, and investigators have yet to establish who owned or controlled the electronic devices containing the material.

Why is Markle's half-brother a person of interest?

According to Remulla , witnesses have alleged that underage girls were brought to a residence associated with Thomas Jr. in the Philippines.

"We have a witness [who says] underage girls were being brought to his house. We will investigate whether the son was involved in the crime," the interior secretary said.

Authorities haven't established whether those alleged visits involved criminal conduct or whether they were connected to the material recovered during the investigation.

Remulla explained that police were examining the possibility of other individuals being involved rather than limiting their inquiries to Thomas Sr .

"To accuse the father only is only half the police work," he said, emphasizing the need to examine the available evidence.

The investigation began after Thomas Jr. claimed in October that he discovered hundreds, potentially thousands, of suspected child sexual abuse images among his father's belongings.

He subsequently provided material to Philippine authorities and contacted the FBI, requesting an investigation into its origin and ownership.

Thomas Markle Sr. denies allegations

Philippine officials have reported recovering approximately 7,500 photographs and one video believed to contain child sexual abuse material from electronic devices submitted for examination.

However, investigators haven't yet determined who owned the devices or who was responsible for obtaining or storing the material.

Authorities are seeking assistance from the FBI to establish ownership information connected to several phones believed to have originated in the United States.

Thomas Sr. , 82, has strongly denied the allegations made against him by his son, describing them as "sick lies."

"I'm shocked, I'm hurt and I'm very upset that my son is making these accusations against me," he previously told the Daily Mail.

Meghan , the Duchess of Sussex, has also expressed distress over the allegations, which have renewed attention to her longstanding estrangement from her father.

The investigation remains ongoing, with Philippine officials continuing to examine witness accounts and forensic evidence before determining whether criminal charges are warranted.
