Not Royalty: King Charles deals a heavy blow to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following their move to the UK
The Sussexes may be back in Britain, but their royal status hasn’t changed

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s return to Britain may have brought them physically closer to the Royal Family, but King Charles has made one thing clear: their move doesn’t mean a return to royal duties.
The monarch has formally reaffirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain non-working royals, despite recently relocating to the UK with their children. According to a letter sent by the Lord Chamberlain , the couple remain private citizens and won’t represent the Sovereign at official engagements.
“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of the Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of the Royal Family,” the letter is said to state.
The development is a significant reminder that simply moving back to Britain doesn’t undo the decision Harry and Meghan made when they stepped away from frontline royal duties in 2020.
Their return hasn’t reopened the door to the “half-in, half-out” arrangement that would have allowed them to combine royal responsibilities with their independent commercial ventures.
Instead, their charitable activities and business interests will continue to be carried out in a private capacity. Palace officials have also reportedly circulated the clarification to government departments, military officials and the King’s local representatives, ensuring there’s little ambiguity over how the Sussexes should be treated at future events.
The message comes at a particularly notable moment for Harry and Meghan , whose return has sparked fresh interest in their relationship with the monarchy.
Harry and Meghan face a clear boundary
The couple reportedly returned to Britain with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet , after years based in California. Their decision has been linked to a desire to spend more time closer to Harry’s family and give their children an opportunity to develop stronger relationships with their relatives in Britain.
The move follows a period of renewed contact between Harry and his father. Earlier this year, Charles reportedly invited the Sussexes to Highgrove, marking an important family reunion and giving the King an opportunity to spend time with Archie and Lilibet after a lengthy gap.
However, the latest palace clarification shows that improved family relations shouldn’t be confused with a restoration of Harry and Meghan’s former royal status.
Harry is expected to continue supporting causes close to him, including the Invictus Games, while Meghan remains focused on her own business and creative projects. The couple’s professional activities can continue, but they won’t be carried out on behalf of the King .
Harry has already been spotted in London since returning to Britain, with a studio sharing an image of him during a visit. His appearance suggests he’s beginning to resume a more visible presence in the country, but that doesn’t make his activities official royal engagements.
The distinction could become increasingly important as Harry and Meghan settle into life in Britain and potentially make more public appearances. Organizations inviting them to events can’t simply assume they’re receiving members of the working Royal Family.
