Prince Harry and Meghan’s secret Portugal mansion has a Soho house twist
The luxury home is said to function as a private holiday retreat

T he Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly purchased a luxury Portuguese getaway in 2023, but the property is said to be designed for family vacations rather than everyday living. A reported Soho House connection adds an intriguing detail to the couple’s international real estate portfolio.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly added a secluded $8.4 million vacation home in Portugal to their growing collection of properties, offering the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a European escape where they can enjoy family time away from the public spotlight. The reported purchase, which dates to 2023, has attracted renewed attention as the couple navigate a new chapter in their international living arrangements.
After returning to the United Kingdom on August 26th, for an extended stay with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the Sussexes are reportedly retaining their homes in Montecito, California, and Portugal. But the biggest twist surrounding their Portuguese property is its reported purpose: the luxury home is said to function as a private holiday retreat.
According to reports, the property is located near Portugal’s Alentejo coast, in an area known for its beaches, understated luxury developments and relative privacy. The reported £6.3 million purchase, equivalent to approximately $8.4 million, would give the family a convenient European base while preserving their connections to California and Britain.
Neither Harry nor Meghan has publicly confirmed the property’s purchase or disclosed its precise location. The Times previously reported on speculation surrounding their possible connection to the region.
Why Portugal appeals to Harry and Meghan
Portugal reportedly offers the Sussexes something that can be difficult to find when living under constant media scrutiny: a place where they can spend time together as a family without the pressures of their public profiles.
A source quoted by People described the appeal of the country as a chance for Archie and Lilibet to enjoy a more ordinary childhood. “They love Portugal because Archie and Lilibet can simply be kids,” the source said. “It’s always very low-key with beach days, playing and spending time together as a family.”
The account underscores the reported motivation behind the property: privacy, relaxation and the opportunity to step away from the demands of public appearances and professional commitments. The region also offers a familiar connection.
According to The Times, Harry’s cousin Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank , have spent time in Portugal since 2022. Their reported presence in the area may have made the country particularly appealing to the Sussexes, giving Harry access to a family connection while providing the couple with a discreet setting for their own holidays.
The Alentejo coast, south of Lisbon, has attracted affluent buyers seeking coastal properties and a quieter alternative to Portugal’s busier resort destinations. The CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club development in the Melides area has been associated with Eugenie and Brooksbank, although the Sussexes’ exact property location has not been confirmed.
The Soho House connection adds another twist
One of the more intriguing details concerns the reported interior renovation of the Portuguese property. According to the Daily Mail, the Sussexes enlisted designers associated with Soho House to oversee changes to the home’s interiors. Neither the couple nor representatives for Soho House have publicly confirmed the reported arrangement.
The connection is notable because Soho House occupies a special place in Harry and Meghan’s personal history. The couple had their first date at the members-only club’s London location in July 2016, before their relationship became public.
The hospitality brand has also been connected to Meghan’s business ventures. Her lifestyle brand, As Ever, has collaborated with Soho House, adding a professional dimension to the couple’s longstanding association with the company.
The reported renovation would therefore bring together several elements of their lives: their relationship, their interest in design and hospitality, and their efforts to maintain private spaces outside the traditional royal environment.
Details about the renovation remain limited, and the couple have not offered a public tour of the property. Their reported decision to keep the home out of the spotlight is consistent with the privacy that has been cited as one of the main attractions of their Portuguese retreat.
