The British Royal Family in shock: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle leave the US to return to England

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are reportedly preparing for an extended UK stay, with their children set to attend school in Britain and King Charles a major factor in the decision

P rince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing for a major change in family life, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reportedly planning to spend an extended period in the UK after more than six years based in the United States .

The move represents a striking development for a couple who left Britain and stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 before establishing a new life in California.

However, reports indicate that this is not a permanent relocation, with the Sussexes expected to retain their $14.5 million Montecito home.

According to Page Six, the couple decided earlier this month to leave California for an extended stay in Britain, with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet , expected to attend school in the UK.

Sources cited by the publication say that strengthening the children's connections with their wider family is one of the central motivations behind the decision.

A royal insider told Page Six: “I know that Charles is a big reason for their return.”

The timing is particularly significant because Harry and his father, King Charles III , have endured a strained relationship for several years.

Their relationship has shown signs of improvement recently, however, including a meeting at Highgrove during the family's July visit to Britain. Charles and Queen Camilla reportedly hosted Harry, Meghan and their two children at the Gloucestershire residence.

The meeting was especially meaningful because Charles had not seen Archie and Lilibet in person since the Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Harry and Meghan's children are at the heart of the decision

Archie , seven, and Lilibet , five, are expected to begin their education in Britain, giving them an opportunity to spend considerably more time around relatives and develop stronger relationships with members of the extended family.

The move does not mean, however, that they are suddenly being reintegrated into the working royal family.

King Charles is reportedly supportive of the family's return on a personal level while maintaining the distinction between his son as a private citizen and the working members of the monarchy. The Sussexes are not expected to resume official royal duties.

There is also a considerable obstacle when it comes to Harry's relationship with his brother, Prince William .

Despite the thawing relationship between Harry and his father, reports indicate that the longstanding tension between the two brothers remains.

That means Archie and Lilibet are unlikely to suddenly develop a close relationship with their cousins, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis .

Harry does, however, remain close to his cousin Princess Eugenie . She and her husband, Jack Brooksbank , have maintained a relationship with the Sussexes, while the families have also spent time in Portugal.

The return to Britain is therefore likely to be more complicated than a straightforward royal reconciliation. Harry and Meghan have spent years building independent lives away from the monarchy, and their move does not erase the disputes that led to their departure.

Security remains a major concern for Prince Harry

Perhaps the biggest practical question surrounding the family's return involves security.

Harry has spent years challenging the arrangements governing his protection when he visits Britain. His security status changed after he stopped being a working royal, and the issue has been the subject of a prolonged legal dispute.

Earlier this year, security concerns even complicated plans for Meghan and the children to accompany Harry to Britain. Harry had previously said, “I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point.”

A security assessment reported by ITV in July said Harry remained the focus of several terrorist plots, underlining why protection has remained such a sensitive issue for the Sussexes.

Harry is still awaiting a review of his security arrangements by RAVEC, the committee responsible for determining protective arrangements for senior public figures and members of the royal family.

That issue could therefore play an important role in determining how frequently the Sussexes remain in Britain and where they spend their time.

For now, the reported move appears less like a dramatic abandonment of their American life and more like an attempt to establish a second base closer to Harry's family.

After years of distance, the decision could give Charles substantially more opportunities to see his grandchildren while allowing Archie and Lilibet to experience more of their father's home country.

Whether it eventually leads to a deeper reconciliation between Harry and the wider royal family remains uncertain.

But the decision to bring the children to Britain for an extended period represents one of the clearest signs yet that the Sussexes are willing to rebuild part of their connection with the UK.
