VA Benefits Payment September 2026: When are you getting next month's payment?

Veterans should expect the payment on October 1 because VA disability compensation is paid in arrears

Veterans waiting on their September VA disability compensation should expect the payment to arrive on Thursday, October 1 , rather than during September itself.

That is because Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation is generally paid in arrears. A payment issued at the start of one month typically covers the benefit owed for the previous month.

So while the next deposit is dated October 1, it represents September 2026 benefits.

The timing is straightforward this month because October 1 falls on a Thursday and is not a federal holiday. No payment shift is required.

VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly benefit for veterans with service-connected illnesses or injuries.

The amount a veteran receives depends primarily on their disability rating, while eligible dependents can increase the payment once a veteran reaches a 30% rating.

September benefits arrive on October 1

The remaining 2026 payment schedule shows only one significant calendar adjustment before the end of the year.

The October benefit is expected to arrive early, on Friday, October 30, because November 1 falls on a Sunday.

The same general rule applies whenever the normal payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday: the payment is usually moved to the previous business day.

December’s benefit is also scheduled to arrive before the month officially ends, with the payment due Thursday, December 31, because January 1, 2027, is New Year’s Day.

Those early deposits should not be mistaken for additional benefits. They are simply the regular monthly payment moved forward by the calendar.

How much can veterans receive in 2026

VA disability compensation amounts vary based on the veteran’s combined disability rating.

Under the 2026 rates, a veteran with a 10% disability rating receives $180.42 per month, while a 20% rating pays $356.66.

Dependents don't increase benefits at those two rating levels.

A veteran with no dependents receives $551.47 per month at a 30% rating, with payments rising to $3,938.58 at a 100% disability rating.

The 2026 compensation schedule reflects a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment.

Other VA programs also provide recurring monthly payments, including Veterans Pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation and Survivors Pension , although the eligibility rules and benefit amounts differ.

Most veterans receiving regular monthly disability compensation don't need to take any additional action before the September payment.

Recipients can review their payment history through their VA account and monitor direct deposits as the payment date approaches.

The date to remember is Thursday, October 1. After that, the next VA disability payment will come slightly earlier than usual, on Friday, October 30.
