Could pneumonic plague reach the United States? The alert arising from the possible outbreak coming from Russia

The emergence of suspected cases in Russia once again drew attention to one of the most severe forms of the plague. Is there really a risk that the disease could spread to the United States?

The death of a worker at an institute specializing in dangerous diseases triggered quarantines and contact tracing in Siberia. Russia is talking about pneumonia of unknown origin, while the United States is following the case closely.

The case raised health alerts inside and outside Russia. The woman, identified by international media as Darya Shipilova, died after developing rapidly progressing pneumonia , while hospitals in the region imposed restrictions and authorities began monitoring people who had been in contact with her.

Five hospitals in the Siberian region of Irkutsk went into quarantine and some 200 people were isolated following the death from possible pneumonic plague of the laboratory technician at the Anti-Plague Institute.

What is pneumonic plague and why is it a concern?

Pneumonic plague represents one of the most critical health threats worldwide due to its extreme aggressiveness and ability to spread. Unlike the bubonic variant, this form of the infection directly attacks the lungs and is transmitted from person to person through the air, via the droplets expelled when coughing or sneezing.

This characteristic makes it the only variant of the bacterium Yersinia pestis capable of triggering massive and rapid outbreaks, which raises alarms among international public health organizations.

The main factor of concern among the medical community is its fulminant progression and its fatality rate, which approaches 100% if not treated in time. With an incubation period that can be as short as 24 hours, initial symptoms such as high fever and coughing up blood rapidly progress to severe respiratory failure. Although the disease is completely curable with common antibiotics, the window for action is extremely narrow, requiring immediate medical diagnosis and treatment within the first 24 hours from the onset of the initial symptoms to guarantee the patient's survival.

Symptoms can appear quickly and include fever, weakness, headache, shortness of breath, and cough , which in more advanced cases may contain blood.

Could it reach the United States?

The existence of cases in another country does not automatically mean that the disease is on its way to the United States . For international spread to occur, certain conditions of transmission and exposure would have to be met.

In addition, plague is not a completely unknown disease in U.S. territory. Human cases have been recorded, especially in some areas of the western part of the country, although they are infrequent. This means that the bacterium exists, but not that there is currently a widespread epidemic.

Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, confirmed that Washington is monitoring the situation along with the CDC and other federal agencies. Rubio indicated that for the moment he does not believe there is cause for widespread alarm, although he assured that the case warrants attention while more data becomes known about what happened in Siberia.

The fact that explains why it remains a concern

The case involves an employee of the Anti-Plague Research Institute in Irkutsk , Siberia. Russian authorities claim that tests have not shown that her illness was related to the dangerous pathogens handled at the facility, and they have denied finding evidence of a laboratory accident despite reports circulating online. Contacts have been traced and placed under medical observation, and authorities reported on Monday that no other illnesses linked to the institute have been identified.

The news about the suspected cases in Russia raises a health concern that must be analyzed with caution: the risk of international spread should not be confused with the possibility of a serious disease making headlines again. Monitoring the cases and confirming their origin will be key to determining the true scope of the episode.
