Donald Trump returns with his aide Natalie Harp after a weekend without Melania: "She's watching us"

The president’s return to Washington with Harp has reignited questions about the aide’s unusually close role

Donald Trump returned to the White House on Sunday night with one of his most closely watched aides, Natalie Harp , after a weekend in Ireland that once again placed their unusually close working relationship under the spotlight.

Harp , 35, traveled with the 80-year-old president during his two-day visit, which combined diplomatic meetings with a stop at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg for the Irish Open. Trump met Irish President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin before attending the tournament at his resort.

After the trip, Harp was photographed alongside Trump as they returned to Washington. She traveled aboard Air Force One and later Marine One, maintaining the proximity that has made her a familiar figure around the president.

First lady Melania Trump wasn't part of the delegation. Her absence attracted additional attention because of the limited number of public appearances she's made during Trump's second term.

During remarks in Dublin, Trump addressed his wife's absence with a joke, saying she was with him “in spirit” and was watching. He also said Melania had declined the lengthy flight after he invited her to join him.

“My wife is here in spirit. She’s watching right now,” Trump said. “I said, ‘Well, why don’t you come with me?’ She said, ‘Well, it’s a seven-hour trip. Maybe I’m not that friendly.’”

Harp’s unusual role keeps attracting attention

Harp's constant presence has generated considerable discussion in Washington. She has been nicknamed the “human printer” because she reportedly carries a portable printer and supplies Trump with printed news reports, social-media posts and other material.

Her role has made her a distinctive figure among the president's aides, particularly because of the reportedly personal nature of some of her interactions with him.

Reports have also focused on personal notes Harp allegedly left for Trump , intensifying questions about the boundaries of their professional relationship.

Trump has reportedly praised her loyalty, while the White House has repeatedly rejected suggestions that their relationship is inappropriate.

The scrutiny grew again during the Ireland trip after journalist Aaron Rupar highlighted Harp's presence online. The White House's Rapid Response 47 account responded with a personal attack on Rupar , accusing him of posting “creepy” material about the president and his staff.

The exchange shows the increasingly combative relationship between the Trump administration and members of the media who scrutinize the president and those around him.

Harp has largely avoided public comment throughout the controversy. Her continued presence beside Trump means that she remains a prominent subject of attention whenever the president travels.

Melania's absence has added another layer to that attention, although representatives for the first lady have pushed back against speculation about her private life or relationship with Harp , as the White House maintains that Harp's role is strictly professional.

As Trump continues his second term, Harp's proximity to the president is likely to remain a topic of interest, particularly whenever she appears alongside him on high-profile domestic or international trips.
