FAFSA application September 2026: What is the deadline to apply this month and how do you know if you're eligible?
The federal deadline is still months away, but state and college cutoffs can arrive much sooner.

Students looking for financial aid in September 2026 still have time to submit the 2026-27 FAFSA, although waiting could reduce the amount of assistance available.
The federal FAFSA deadline for the 2026-27 academic year is June 30, 2027. That means there isn't one nationwide September 2026 deadline requiring every student to apply this month.
However, colleges and states can set much earlier deadlines, including priority dates that determine access to limited grants and other financial aid.
What is the FAFSA deadline in September 2026?
Federal Student Aid explains: "Your college, career school, or trade school typically has the earliest of all the deadlines."
Those dates vary significantly between schools, while states also establish separate deadlines for their own grants and scholarships.
The Department of Education warns that some financial assistance is limited, making the earliest applicable deadline particularly important.
For federal aid, the 2026-27 FAFSA must be received by June 30, 2027. Students should still submit it as soon as possible rather than treating that as the preferred application date.
Even students who have missed a state or college priority deadline may still qualify for federal assistance.
Who is eligible to complete the FAFSA?
Completing the FAFSA can provide access to federal grants, work-study programs, and student loans.
Eligibility for particular types and amounts of aid depends on factors including financial circumstances, enrollment and the information provided on the application.
Students need a StudentAid.gov account to complete the online form. Depending on their circumstances, parents, spouses or other required contributors may also need accounts and must provide their information.
After the FAFSA is processed, students receive a FAFSA Submission Summary showing information including their Student Aid Index and estimates of possible federal assistance. Those amounts aren't guaranteed.
Federal Student Aid explains that the student's school "makes the final decision about the aid it offers you."
Anyone applying in September should therefore check three separate dates: their school's deadline, their state deadline and the June 30, 2027 federal deadline.
Submitting now can still be worthwhile, but applying earlier generally gives students the best opportunity to access every form of aid for which they may qualify.
