FERS September 2026 Payment: What day will federal retirees get paid next month?
OPM’s payment rules make the next deposit simple, but several calendar changes are coming later in 2026

Federal retirees planning their September finances have a straightforward payment date to work with this time, as the calendar will not force the next FERS annuity deposit to move because of a weekend or federal holiday.
The next regular Federal Employees Retirement System payment is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
That deposit represents the annuity earned during August rather than September itself, an important distinction that can sometimes cause confusion when federal retirees check payment calendars.
The Office of Personnel Management pays regular retirement annuities after the month in which the benefit accrues. As OPM explains, payments are made “usually on the first business day of the month.”
Since September 1 falls on a Tuesday in 2026, the normal schedule remains intact.
Retirees receiving their annuity through direct deposit should expect payment on that date, although individual banks and credit unions may differ in exactly when a deposit becomes visible in an account.
When will FERS retirees be paid in September 2026?
The September 1 deposit covers benefits accrued during August 2026.
Retirees looking further ahead should expect the annuity covering September to be paid on Thursday, October 1.
The following schedule shows the benefit month and scheduled payment date.
August 2026 = September 1, 2026
September 2026 = October 1, 2026
October 2026 = November 2, 2026
November 2026 = December 1, 2026
December 2026 = January 4, 2027
Calendar adjustments become important later in the year.
November 1 falls on a Sunday, meaning the October annuity moves to Monday, November 2. The payment covering December will also be delayed until Monday, January 4, 2027, because New Year’s Day is a federal holiday followed by a weekend.
What federal retirees should do if payment is missing
Most federal retirees and survivors receive their benefits through direct deposit, but a payment that does not appear as expected does not necessarily mean OPM has failed to issue it.
OPM advises retirees who have not received an expected payment to contact their financial institution first. Banks can sometimes provide information about deposits that are pending or still being processed.
If the payment remains missing, retirees can report the issue to OPM.
Federal annuitants can also use OPM’s online retirement services to manage aspects of their benefits, including direct-deposit information, tax withholding and certain financial allotments.
The most important date for the immediate payment cycle remains Tuesday, September 1, 2026. With no holiday or weekend disrupting the calendar, FERS retirees should see their August annuity arrive on the standard first-business-day schedule.
