Kyle Kennedy , granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy , has died at 42, according to her obituary.

She passed away at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, on September 21. Officials haven't confirmed a cause of death, and the circumstances remain under investigation.

Born in Washington, D.C., in 1984, Kyle was the daughter of Michael Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford. Her father was one of Robert and Ethel's 11 children and died on New Year's Eve in 1997 after striking a tree while skiing with relatives. Kyle was just 13 years old when the tragedy occurred.

Despite her family's public profile, Kyle largely kept her personal life private and focused on building a career in education. After earning a history degree from Georgetown University, she began teaching in New York City through Teach For America, working with children in disadvantaged communities.

She later earned a master's degree in early childhood education from Pace University and another in education policy and management from Harvard University's Graduate School of Education.

Life shaped by education and advocacy

Kyle dedicated much of her professional life to improving early childhood education and expanding opportunities for disadvantaged children. Her commitment to helping others continued after a severe spinal cord injury in 2020 left her with long-term paralysis.

She subsequently became an advocate for people with disabilities, speaking out about barriers to equal treatment. She also testified at the Massachusetts State House during a hearing concerning discrimination in health care for people with disabilities.

Her personal life was marked by both family milestones and heartbreaking loss. Kyle married Liam Kerr in Boston in August 2012, and the couple eventually welcomed three children.

Their twins, Conor and Josephine , were born in 2014, but their daughter tragically died just days after birth. They later welcomed their son, Declan. Kyle and Kerr eventually separated.

Outside her work and family commitments, Kyle enjoyed art, animals and travel. She was also an accomplished runner who completed the Boston Marathon in 2019 despite heavy rain. According to her obituary, she finished faster than her father's previous time, reflecting her determination and competitive spirit.

Kyle is survived by her sons, Conor and Declan , her mother, siblings and extended family, including nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held privately.

Although her family name brought public attention, Kyle established a meaningful identity through her dedication to education and supporting vulnerable communities.

Her death at 42 represents a profound loss for her loved ones.
