The billionaire sets a historic record with his contribution

Elon Musk has once again placed himself at the center of the political spotlight in the United States. The owner of Tesla, SpaceX and X has become the largest known donor in a single election cycle in the country's history after allocating 474 million dollars to organizations linked to the Republican Party ahead of the legislative elections being held this Tuesday.

The figure is unprecedented for a person who is not running as a candidate in the elections. According to an investigation by The New York Times, the volume of the magnate's contributions surpasses any previously known record . In addition, the amount could be even higher , since some of his donations are not public and federal records only reflect the transactions made up to last October 14 .

The billionaire has channeled these funds to strengthen the Republican strategy in a key election for control of Congress. While conservatives are trying to hold on to their majority, Democrats are seeking to regain ground in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Musk's economic involvement is total and comes accompanied by growing political pressure. Several Democratic lawmakers have already warned that they will push for investigations into the businessman if they manage to gain control of either of the two chambers.

Possible investigations would focus on different fronts: from his management at the helm of the now-defunct Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), to his companies' public contracts and his role in matters related to the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Historic spending in these midterm elections

Musk's record coincides with a campaign that is also shattering political investment figures in the United States. Data from the specialized firm AdImpact show that the 2026 midterm elections have reached historic levels of advertising spending, surpassing even the records set by the 2024 presidential elections.

In a scenario marked by the battle for Congress and by the growing weight of major donors, Musk’s entry with nearly $500 million further strengthens his influence in U.S. politics and makes him one of the most decisive players in the current electoral cycle.
