Four players won at least $1 million Monday, but the jackpot survived and has climbed again
The Powerball jackpot is climbing again, and Wednesday night’s drawing will determine whether the current run finally produces a winner or pushes the prize even higher.
The September 30 jackpot is estimated at $409 million, with a cash option of approximately $170.2 million. The drawing is scheduled for 10:59 p.m. ET, meaning the winning numbers won't be known until Wednesday night.
Interest has grown after Monday’s drawing failed to produce a ticket matching all five white balls and the red Powerball . That rollover lifted the top prize beyond $400 million and created another potentially life-changing drawing.
Several players still collected seven-figure prizes Monday, showing that matching every number is not the only way to walk away with a significant payout.
Monday’s drawing produced four major winners
The September 28 winning numbers were 17, 21, 29, 42 and 49, with 7 as the red Powerball . The Power Play multiplier was 3x.
No ticket matched all six numbers, but one ticket sold in Puerto Rico matched the five white balls and included Power Play. That player doubled the standard $1 million Match 5 prize to $2 million.
Three additional tickets in Illinois, North Carolina and New York matched all five white balls without the Powerball . Each of those tickets was worth $1 million.
Wednesday’s results will determine whether the $409 million jackpot is claimed or rolls into Saturday’s drawing. If there's no winner, the advertised prize will increase again based on ticket sales and the lottery’s calculation.
How Powerball prizes and odds work
A standard Powerball play costs $2. Players choose five numbers between 1 and 69 before selecting one red Powerball from 1 through 26.
Matching all five white balls and the Powerball wins the jackpot. Matching five white balls alone is worth $1 million, while four white balls plus the Powerball produces a $50,000 prize.
Smaller payouts are available for other combinations, beginning at $4 for matching only the Powerball . Players can also add Power Play for an extra $1 in most participating jurisdictions, increasing eligible non-jackpot prizes.
The Power Play multiplier can be 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x or 10x, although the 10x option is only available when the advertised jackpot is $150 million or less.
Winning the jackpot remains extraordinarily difficult, with odds of approximately 1 in 292.2 million.
Powerball drawings take place every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday, giving players three opportunities each week to chase the top prize.
Wednesday’s $409 million drawing is now the focus. One winning ticket could end the current jackpot run. Another rollover would send the prize even higher heading into the weekend.
