Savannah Guthrie made a poignant reference to her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie , during Thursday’s episode of Today, seven months after the 84-year-old disappeared from her Arizona home.

The NBC anchor was discussing an upcoming Today trip to Ireland when she briefly spoke about her family’s heritage. Savannah explained that her mother was Irish and that her maternal grandmother’s family came from Galway.

The simple comment carried extra emotional weight because Savannah referred to Nancy in the past tense.

“My mother’s family w-, my mother was Irish, her grandmother,” said Savannah . “They were from Galway.”

The moment came as Savannah and her fellow hosts celebrated plans for the entire Today team to broadcast live from Ireland on October 16. Savannah said she’d never visited the country and appeared excited about finally making the trip.

While she maintained her usual upbeat demeanor, the wording quickly attracted attention given the circumstances surrounding her mother’s disappearance.

A source has denied that Savannah’s use of the past tense was intended to confirm that Nancy has died. Authorities, meanwhile, continue to investigate Nancy’s disappearance as an active case.

The FBI says Nancy was last seen at her Tucson residence on January 31, 2026, and investigators are seeking information that could help locate her or identify those responsible.

Savannah Guthrie continues to seek answers

Nancy’s disappearance has left Savannah and her siblings facing an agonizing period of uncertainty. Investigators have released surveillance footage showing an armed individual appearing to tamper with a camera at Nancy’s front door around the time she vanished.

The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have continued working together on the investigation.

Savannah has previously acknowledged that her mother may no longer be alive. In August, she marked the passage of six months with an emotional social media message, describing the family’s pain while continuing to plead for information.

She wrote that the family wakes each day trying to remain strong, drawing on the resilience Nancy taught them. At the same time, Savannah made clear that the family’s grief hasn’t diminished their determination to discover what happened.

The Guthrie family has also offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s return, while the FBI is offering up to $50,000 for information leading to her recovery or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.

The upcoming Ireland broadcast will therefore carry a meaning beyond television for Savannah . Galway is part of her mother’s family history, making the journey especially significant during such a painful chapter.

The Today team’s Ireland trip was also inspired by a 2025 conversation between Savannah and Irish actor Pierce Brosnan , when she expressed her long-standing desire to visit the country.

Savannah’s latest reference to her mother was brief, but it served as another reminder that the disappearance continues to weigh heavily on her and her family.
