Social Security COLA Increase 2027: What is the latest projection with August's U.S. inflation?

Fresh inflation data has pushed the leading 2027 Social Security COLA estimates into the mid-3% range, but beneficiaries will have to wait until October for the official figure

S ocial Security recipients have received a clearer indication of how much their benefits could increase next year after the latest U.S. inflation figures were released, with current forecasts pointing to a 2027 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of around 3.5% to 3.6%.

The latest estimate from AARP puts the potential increase at 3.6%, while the Senior Citizens League (TSCL) is projecting a slightly lower 3.5% adjustment. Both forecasts are above the 2.8% COLA that beneficiaries received for 2026.

The projections come as the government releases the final pieces of inflation data needed to calculate next year's increase. August's figures showed that consumer prices remained elevated, reinforcing expectations that Social Security payments will receive a larger adjustment in 2027.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 3.4% over the 12 months through August.

Prices climbed 0.4% on a seasonally adjusted basis during the month, while the energy index rose 2.1%. Gasoline prices increased 3.9% in August and were 27.4% higher than a year earlier.

The inflation measure used specifically for the Social Security calculation, however, is the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. The CPI-W increased 3.5% over the 12 months through August, according to the BLS.

That distinction is important because the annual Social Security COLA is not simply based on the headline inflation rate reported each month.

How August inflation affects the 2027 COLA

The Social Security Administration calculates the COLA using the average CPI-W readings for July, August and September and compares that three-month average with the corresponding period from the previous year. September's number is therefore the final piece of the calculation.

AARP's latest forecast of 3.6% uses the available inflation data through August, together with a projection for September. The organization says the estimate would add approximately $75 to the average retired worker's monthly benefit.

The Senior Citizens League is slightly more conservative, forecasting a 3.5% increase. Its estimate has moved down from 3.6% previously, illustrating why the final percentage cannot yet be treated as certain.

If the 3.6% forecast ultimately becomes reality, an average monthly retirement benefit of around $2,086 would rise by approximately $75 per month.

A 3.5% increase would produce a somewhat smaller boost. AARP notes that the exact dollar increase will vary depending on the individual's current benefit amount.

The 2027 adjustment would also represent a noticeable increase compared with this year's 2.8% COLA . However, a larger check does not necessarily mean beneficiaries will experience a substantial improvement in their purchasing power.

Inflation has continued to affect several categories that are particularly important to older Americans.

The August BLS report showed food prices were up 2.7% from a year earlier, while shelter increased 3.0%. Medical care rose 1.6%, and energy prices were up 16.3% over the same period.

Those figures help explain why some retirees may feel that even a mid-3% Social Security increase will not fully compensate for their expenses.

AARP's Rich Johnson said current data provides a solid basis for the estimate, while emphasizing that September could still alter the final calculation.

“With only one month of inflation data to go until the 2027 COLA is finalized, there’s less uncertainty about what that increase will be,” he said. “Unless prices change dramatically in September, we’re confident that the COLA will be in the mid-3 percent range.”

The official number is expected on October 14, 2026, when the September inflation data is released and the SSA completes its calculation. The resulting adjustment will apply to Social Security benefits beginning in January 2027.

For now, the latest evidence suggests beneficiaries should prepare for a COLA somewhere around 3.5% to 3.6%, with 3.6% currently representing AARP's leading estimate. But until September's CPI-W data is available, the final 2027 Social Security increase remains subject to change.
