SSDI Benefits 2027 Changes: What is changing for Social Security disability beneficiaries next year?
Disability beneficiaries are expected to receive higher payments, while a feared eligibility overhaul has been abandoned.

Social Security Disability Insurance beneficiaries are heading into 2027 with one major financial change expected, but without the sweeping eligibility restrictions that had previously worried disability advocates.
The most immediate change will be the annual cost of living adjustment. The exact 2027 COLA won’t be confirmed until October 14, but current estimates are around 3.5%.
For an SSDI recipient receiving the average worker disability benefit of about $1,635 per month, a 3.5% increase would add roughly $57 monthly.
2027 SSDI payments are expected to increase
The COLA is designed to help Social Security payments keep pace with inflation rather than provide beneficiaries with a genuine increase in purchasing power.
"A COLA isn't really a raise; it's catch-up for inflation you already paid," retirement expert Geoffrey Schmidt told Yahoo Finance.
The final percentage could still change because the Social Security Administration calculates the adjustment using inflation data from the third quarter of the year.
Importantly, there are no scheduled cuts to Social Security benefits in 2027 under current law.
"Nothing taking effect in 2027 cuts your benefit or rewrites the rules against you," Schmidt said.
That means SSDI recipients should expect their existing benefit to continue, with the annual COLA applied once the final figure is announced.
Major disability eligibility overhaul has been dropped
Another significant development is something that now won't happen.
The Social Security Administration had considered changing how it evaluates disability claims, including potentially reducing the importance of age when deciding whether applicants can adjust to other work.
Those proposals caused concern that older applicants could find it considerably harder to qualify for SSDI. However, the SSA later told disability advocates it wasn't moving forward with the planned overhaul.
" Social Security Disability Insurance is a critical lifeline for people who find themselves no longer able to work," AARP vice president of financial security Jenn Jones said.
The existing disability evaluation system therefore remains in place rather than being replaced by the previously discussed rules.
For current SSDI beneficiaries , the picture for 2027 is consequently more straightforward than some earlier reports suggested.
Monthly benefits are expected to rise through the COLA, while the major eligibility changes that could have tightened access to disability benefits have been shelved.
