TANF September 2026 Payment: When are your benefits being deposited for next month?
There is no national TANF deposit day, and local programs control when monthly benefits are issued

Families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families are approaching another monthly payment cycle, but unlike Social Security or other federally scheduled benefits, there is no single September 2026 TANF payment date for the entire country.
TANF is federally funded but run by individual states, the District of Columbia and tribal governments. That gives each program control over eligibility, benefit levels and payment schedules, and many states operate TANF under their own names.
In much of the country, regular cash assistance is expected at or near the beginning of September. Other states stagger payments according to a case number or another identifier.
TANF September 2026 payment dates by state
The following shows the regular 2026 TANF cash-assistance issuance schedule reported for each state and Washington, D.C.
Because TANF is administered locally, households should treat multi-day ranges as payment windows and confirm their individual date with their state agency.
California - September 1-3
Connecticut - September 1
Florida - September 1-3 business days
Massachusetts - September 1
Mississippi - September 1
New Hampshire - September 1
New Jersey - September 1-5
New York - September 1-15
North Carolina - September 3-27
North Dakota - September 1
Pennsylvania - September 2-27
Rhode Island - September 1
South Carolina - September 1
South Dakota - September 1
Washington - September 1-5
West Virginia - September 1
District of Columbia - September 1
In California, CalWORKs cash benefits are normally paid between the first and third calendar days of the month.
Texas similarly staggers TANF benefits over September 1-3 according to the final digit of a household's EDG number. Florida distributes Temporary Cash Assistance over the first three business days.
Why your TANF deposit date can be different
A payment window doesn't mean recipients can choose any day within it. In states with staggered issuance, a household's assigned day may be determined by its case or assistance number, while some programs use other identifying information.
The delivery method also varies. TANF can be issued electronically on a debit card or through direct deposit, while some states can use paper checks.
September also contains Labor Day on September 7. Households with payments potentially affected by weekends or holidays should check their state benefit portal or TANF office rather than assuming benefits will arrive early or late.
What to do if your September TANF payment is missing
Recipients should first check that their normal payment date has actually passed and confirm their TANF case remains active.
If benefits are normally deposited electronically, check the balance and recent transactions on the state's benefits card or account. Any recent notice involving eligibility, recertification, income or work requirements should also be reviewed.
The key difference from SNAP is that recipients should not use a state's food-assistance payment calendar to predict TANF cash benefits. The two programs can follow completely different schedules even when both benefits are loaded onto the same EBT card.
