C hrista Pike sang with her spiritual adviser and laughed during a failed execution that left her alive in a Tennessee hospital, with witnesses later describing how she appeared to fall into a deep sleep despite receiving two doses of lethal drugs. The 50-year-old killer was scheduled to be executed at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution on September 30 after spending three decades on death row for the 1995 murder of Job Corps classmate Colleen Slemmer .

Witnesses entered the execution chamber shortly before 7pm, with Pike already strapped to the gurney and an IV attached to her arm. She delivered what was expected to be her final statement before turning her attention to her spiritual adviser. “I just want to say that I’m going to leave this world the way I spent most of my life and that is with love,” Pike said, according to accounts of the execution. She added that she loved both her supporters and those who hated her, and said she is at peace. Pike then sang I Love You So Much and is reported to have smiled and laughed after complaining about a vein in her arm. Minutes later, however, the execution began to take an unexpected turn.

Pike successfully resists two fatal injections

A small white rock appeared in a window at about 7:41pm, which witnesses understood as a signal that the lethal drugs had been administered before the blinds were then closed minutes later. However, William Puckett , who watched from the observation room, said Pike was still conscious and moving after the first injection and he described hearing what he called, “a joyous laugh and chuckle.” The curtain later rose again, and witnesses could see that Pike remained alive before a second dose was administered, after which her body twitched abruptly, and she gave a significant gasp for air. The blinds were closed again at approximately 8:05pm, once again signaling the dose had been given but the sounds coming from inside the chamber suggested that the execution had still not been completed. Puckett described hearing a “loud, deep in the back of the sinus cavity snore” that sounded like an old man sleeping and the snoring continued for roughly another 50 minutes as doctors and lawyers moved in and out of the chamber. Media witnesses were eventually escorted from the building at around 8:53pm, with Pike reportedly still breathing and her attorneys later said she had maintained a heartbeat and had not lost consciousness during the attempted execution. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where she remained in critical condition the following day and the failed execution has prompted further scrutiny of Tennessee ’s lethal-injection procedures. The state has halted scheduled executions in the state for the remainder of 2026 and ordered an independent review of what happened.
