What will be open for Labor Day weekend 2026? Government services and stores open for this holiday

Here is what shoppers, travelers and families need to know before Labor Day on Monday, September 7

Labor Day weekend is almost here, giving millions of Americans a three-day break before the unofficial end of summer arrives.

In 2026, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 7, meaning a number of government agencies, financial institutions and other services will shut down for the federal holiday.

At the same time, Americans planning to shop, stock up on groceries or make last-minute purchases will find that many major retailers continue operating.

The difference between the two groups can make Labor Day confusing. A store may be open while the bank next door is closed, for example, and a grocery chain may operate normally even though USPS is not delivering regular mail.

The holiday is observed on the first Monday of September and honors the contributions and achievements of American workers. For most consumers, however, the practical question is what will actually be available on Monday.

The good news is that most major retail stores and grocery chains are expected to remain open, although individual locations can adjust their schedules.

Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowe 's and Best Buy are among the major chains generally operating on Labor Day. Grocery stores including Kroger, Publix, Safeway and Whole Foods are also expected to welcome customers, although holiday hours can differ by location. (fox5dc.com)

That means people who need food, household supplies or home-improvement items should have plenty of options throughout the weekend and on Monday.

However, there is one major retail exception shoppers should remember.

Costco will be closed on Labor Day . The warehouse club traditionally observes several major holidays by closing its U.S. locations, and 2026 is no exception. Anyone relying on Costco for a holiday barbecue or other supplies should make the trip before Monday.

Government offices, banks and USPS will be closed

The biggest disruptions will affect government and financial services.

Most federal government offices will be closed Monday, as will many state and local government offices. DMV locations, courts, libraries and other municipal facilities commonly follow the holiday schedule, although local rules can differ.

Local governments across the country are already announcing their plans. Washington County, Maryland, for example, has confirmed that its government offices will close Monday for Labor Day.

That does not mean every public service stops. Police, firefighters, emergency medical services and other essential operations continue operating.

Some municipalities also alter trash collection schedules rather than canceling service altogether. Residents should therefore check their city or county's specific Labor Day announcement.

The U.S. Postal Service will also be closed. There will be no regular mail delivery on Monday, and post offices will not provide normal retail service.

Some self-service facilities and online USPS services may remain accessible, but customers should not expect regular mail operations until Tuesday.

Shipping companies will also operate differently. UPS and FedEx generally suspend their standard pickup and delivery services on Labor Day, although certain critical or specialized services can remain available.

Customers with time-sensitive packages should check the exact service rather than assuming every shipment will be delayed. Banks are another important closure.

Most traditional bank branches will be shut on Monday because Labor Day is included on the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule.

Customers can still use ATMs, mobile banking and online banking, but transactions requiring processing by bank employees may not be completed until Tuesday, September 8. The financial markets will also take the day off.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed, along with the U.S. bond market. Regular trading is scheduled to resume Tuesday.

For consumers, that means the easiest way to avoid an unnecessary trip is to separate the holiday schedule into two categories: essential government and financial services, which are largely closed, and commercial businesses, which are mostly open.

Stores expected to be open

Shoppers should generally be able to visit:

- Many pharmacies and restaurants

Hours can vary, particularly for pharmacies and independently operated locations, so checking the individual store before leaving home is still advisable.

Costco is the major national retailer to remember as closed on Monday. Sam's Club may also have holiday-specific closures or reduced schedules, making it especially important for warehouse-club shoppers to verify their local location.

Restaurants are generally open during Labor Day weekend as well, although individual businesses can choose their own holiday hours.

Airports and travel services will continue operating because Labor Day is not a nationwide shutdown of transportation. Travelers should nevertheless expect a busy holiday weekend, with the possibility of heavier traffic and crowded airports.

The broader pattern is straightforward: Labor Day is a federal holiday, but it is not a retail shutdown.

Americans needing to visit a government office, mail a package through USPS, visit a bank branch or complete a stock-market transaction should plan around the Monday closure. Those looking to buy groceries, shop for Labor Day sales or pick up household supplies will have considerably more options.

Because schedules can vary from one location to another, the safest approach is to verify the specific business before heading out.

For most Americans, though, Monday will look much like a normal shopping day — just with government buildings, banks, financial markets and several major services taking the holiday off.
