There are two payment dates in the month of October to watch out for

V A disability beneficiaries are set to receive two payments in the month of October 2026, with the first arriving at the start and another scheduled just before November begins.

Millions of veterans rely on monthly Department of Veterans Affairs disability compensation, which provides financial support to those with disabilities or long-term health conditions connected to their military service.

The VA pays these benefits in arrears, meaning payments for one month are generally issued at the beginning of the following month. That creates two payment dates for beneficiaries during October.

The first payment is scheduled for October 1 whilst a second payment will arrive October 30. The first payment is for October, and the second is for November as VA payments are generally issued on working days rather than weekends.

Thus, the October 30 payment comes earlier than the start of November because November 1 falls on a Sunday, and the amount a veteran receives depends primarily on their VA disability rating , which ranges from 0% to 100% in 10-point increments.

A 10% disability rating carries a monthly base payment of $180.42. A 100% rating receives a base payment of $4,085.43. Veterans rated at 30% or higher can also qualify for additional compensation based on eligible dependents, including spouses, children and parents. A veteran with a 100% rating, a spouse and one child, for example, receives $4,318.99 per month.

Eligibility generally requires a current diagnosed condition that can be connected to military service, along with qualifying military service and a discharge under conditions other than dishonorable. Covered conditions can include chronic back and spinal disorders , hearing loss , respiratory diseases , mobility limitations , gastrointestinal problems and illnesses associated with exposure to toxic substances.

Mental health conditions can also qualify, including anxiety disorders , depression , traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder , covering a large scope of the risks involved with service.

How much could VA Education Benefits pay in October?

The monthly amount depends on the type of education or training and the beneficiary’s enrollment level. Beginning October 1, full-time college or university enrollment pays $1,621 per month.

At the same time, 75% enrollment pays $1,281 and 50% enrollment pays $939. Lower enrollment levels may be limited by tuition and fees.

Trade and vocational programs use the same monthly rates based on scheduled clock hours.

Those receiving on-the-job training or participating in apprenticeships receive payments based on their stage of training, ranging from $1,029 per month during months one through six, to $259 after 19 months.

Payments can also be prorated when enrollment covers only part of a month. For example, a student who begins classes on October 20 would receive payment for the days enrolled rather than the full monthly amount.

In other news, The VA says it processed more than three million disability benefits claims during fiscal year 2026 as of September 18, surpassing the previous annual record of 3.001 million claims set in fiscal year 2025.

The Department of Veteran Affairs also reported that it had awarded more than $207 billion in compensation and pension benefits to veterans and survivors with roughly a week remaining in the fiscal year.

According to the VA , the backlog of veterans waiting for benefits has fallen by more than 70% since January 2025, whilst average disability claim processing time has also declined substantially.

The average decision time stood at 75.6 days in September 2026, compared with 141.5 days on January 20, 2025, according to the department.

The VA also reported a 94% claims-processing accuracy rate, its highest level in two years, while saying that more than 60% of claims submitted by veterans continue to be granted.
