In Alaska, an entire town lives in the same 14-story building, which houses the post office and the police station: people go to school through a tunnel, and the road closes at night

One of the most spectacular places on the planet

There are remote cities and towns that most people know nothing about and would be unable to locate and, above all, they would be surprised if they knew the living conditions. In Alaska , for example, there is an entire town whose inhabitants live in the same 14-story building , which also houses the post office, the Town Hall, the grocery store, and the police station.

It is located on the shores of an Alaskan fjord, and the town is called Whittier , at the beginning of the Passage Canal . It is surrounded by the state's steep mountains and has just over 250 inhabitants .

One building houses 85% of the population

What is curious about this place lies precisely in the way those people live, and everything revolves around the Begich Towers, a 14-story building with 196 apartments . It is a kind of hotel at the foot of the glaciers where, according to local data, around 85% of the population lives . The other 15% is located in another building, although a smaller one.

Another striking fact is that Whittier has no streets with single-family homes or garden areas; instead, the entire town is the apartment block itself. It was built in the 1950s by the United States Army so that military personnel and their families could stay there, since it had been a strategic point during World War II .

Once the army left the area in the early 1960s, the city bought the building and in 1974 it was renamed Begich Towers, in honor of Nick Begich, an Alaska congressman who died in 1972 in a plane crash. Inside are all the amenities for the residents: city hall, the police station, the supermarket, the laundromat, the medical clinic, and the church occupy the lower floors.
