Former Toronto Blue Jays star Bo Bichette made a key decision about his future by exercising his player option with the New York Mets for the 2027 season .

Bichette earned $42 million in his first year with the Mets after leaving Toronto and had the chance to become a free agent again by declining the option, though that would have come with a $5 million buyou t.

In the end, the infielder chose to stay in New York and continue with the Mets’ project.

Bo Bichette locks in $42 million with the Mets

Rather than testing free agency, Bichette exercised his player option and guaranteed himself a $42 million salary for the 2027 season .

Will Sammon of The Athletic was the first to report the decision.

The deal still includes a second player option for $42 million in 2028 , a choice Bichette can make next summer. These options are part of the three-year , $126 million contract he signed with the Mets after spending his first seven Major League seasons with the Blue Jays.

A difficult first season in New York

Bichette’s decision comes after a year that fell short of expectations with the Mets.

In 2026 he hit .260 with a .702 OPS and a 97 OPS + , numbers that show his offensive production was slightly below the MLB average.

Although he hit 18 home runs — the same total he posted in 2025 with Toronto — his overall impact at the plate was diminished, and he did not reach the level he had shown during his best years with the Blue Jays.

In addition, Bichette faced a significant defensive transition, moving from shortstop to third base for the first time in his MLB career. His performance with the glove drew mixed reviews, though his greatest value has historically come from his bat rather than his defense.

Bichette opts for stability in New York

Before making his decision, there was a possibility that Bichette would decline the option and return to free agency in search of a new contract.

However, after an uneven season, it was unlikely that another team would be willing to offer him the same $42 million for the upcoming year .

For that reason, the four-time All-Star chose financial security and will remain with the Mets in 2027 , where he will look to rediscover the offensive form that made him one of Toronto’s most important stars.
