The rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox has heated up again following controversial comments from Boston broadcaster Will Flemming about Yankees outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Flemming called Chisholm a “bush league” (unprofessional) player and also suggested that a Red Sox pitcher should intentionally hit Yankees catcher Austin Wells .

The comments did not sit well inside the Yankees’ clubhouse. New York’s biggest star, Aaron Judge , criticized Flemming’s remarks and said that type of message has no place in baseball.

“He needs to stay out of that and not be telling people to throw at players and injure players,” Judge said, according to ESPN . “That’s not what this game’s about.

“Not too happy hearing broadcasters talking about trying to injure or hurt players. He needs to clean that up.”

Meanwhile, Chisholm Jr. said he had not spoken with Flemming after his comments and dismissed the controversy.

“I didn’t even know who that was until this morning,” Chisholm said. “And I’m still not going to remember who he is after today.”

Flemming also spoke with Yankees manager Aaron Boone and later issued an apology on social media.

“Since I have been receiving nonstop calls and threats, I felt like it was important to hop back on here and say: My comments during yesterday’s broadcast crossed a line,” Flemming wrote on X, according to MLB.com. “I’m emotional and a fan at heart, and that bled into the broadcast.”

Flemming also acknowledged that he could have chosen his words better and explained that the intensity of the rivalry influenced his comments.

“I meant no disrespect to the Yankees players or organization. I could and should have used different words. These rivalry games get me fired up; I apologize for letting the emotion of the moment get the best of me,” he added.

The Yankees and Red Sox recently faced off in a crucial four-game series with major implications in the American League East race. New York won three games at Yankee Stadium.

This season, the Yankees are second in the division with a 78-60 record .
