Ex-Yankees boss defends Aaron Boone after heartbreaking exit
Joe Girardi came to Aaron Boone’s defense, saying the Yankees manager had one of his best seasons despite another early playoff exit and deserves to remain in the Bronx.

A aron Boone received a major vote of confidence amid growing criticism following another early Yankees playoff exit. Joe Girardi , the former Yankees manager and the last skipper to lead New York to a World Series title , defended Boone’s work and said he believes he deserves to remain in the position.
Girardi discussed Boone’s future during an appearance on “The Show with Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman,” where he praised the manager’s performance despite the Yankees ending their season with a loss in the American League Division Series (ALDS) .

When asked whether Boone had reached the end of his tenure in New York, Girardi dismissed that idea and said this could have been his best season as a manager.
“I think you could argue this was his best year of managing,” Girardi said on the show. “I think he got the most out of this team during the course of the season with all they had to deal with.”
The former Yankees manager highlighted how Boone had to adjust the team’s style of play, as New York could no longer rely solely on its offensive power as it had in previous years.
“And the way they won games, he had to flip the way they won games. They had to win them from a pitching standpoint, different from some of the years past where they would win by just outslugging people. He couldn’t do that this year. And I think he ran the bullpen extremely well and got the most out of those guys.”
Girardi also pointed to the Yankees’ offense as the biggest issue during the 2026 season , but made it clear that Boone should not be blamed for the lineup’s struggles.
“Can you say that that’s his fault? I don’t think so,” Girardi said. “To me, that’s not his fault. I just don’t think the guys had the years that they projected them to have, or some of the guys just aren’t as good as they thought they would be.”
Boone has managed the Yankees for nine seasons, but during his tenure the team has reached the World Series only once, a fact that continues to fuel the debate about his future in the Bronx.
