Spike Lee confrontation erupts before Yankees-Red Sox playoff clash

The filmmaker was posing for photos with fans before one encounter in Legends Suite turned heated

Spike Lee was already a familiar sight inside Yankee Stadium before Wednesday night’s wild-card matchup between the Yankees and Red Sox , but the filmmaker became the center of attention for an entirely different reason before first pitch.

Lee was in the Legends Suite dining area when another fan reportedly approached him for a selfie and then asked him to say, “F**k Palestine.” The request immediately changed the tone of the interaction.

Video from the scene showed the 69-year-old director being restrained by stadium personnel as he confronted the person.

“Why’d you come over to me?” Lee shouted during the exchange.

Another man in a blue sport jacket then pointed toward the individual and said, “You’ve gotta go. You’ve gotta go.”

The person was ultimately removed from the area.

Very different scene moments earlier

Accounts from the suite described Lee as relaxed and approachable before the incident.

He had been taking selfies with fans and was reportedly leaving open seats at his table for people who wanted to join him. One source later described the other fan’s behavior as “absolutely wrong” and said the episode “ruined our f**king meal.”

The exchange also carried added context because Lee has previously spoken publicly about his concern for Palestinians. Earlier this year, after wearing Palestinian-themed clothing during NBA All-Star Weekend, Lee explained his intentions in a social media post.

“The Clothes I Wore are Symbols of My Concern For The Palestinian Children and Civilians, And My Utmost Belief In Human Dignity For All Humankind,” he wrote.

Lee also said the gesture wasn't intended as hostility toward Jewish people or as support for violence.

Lee long been part of New York sports culture

The confrontation stood out partly because Lee is usually seen as part of the scenery at major New York sporting events. He has long been associated with the Knicks , frequently appearing courtside at Madison Square Garden and following the team closely during its championship run last season.

He has also regularly attended Yankees games and was at the stadium one night earlier for the opening game of the series against Boston , where he posted a photo with his daughter, Satchel. That made Wednesday’s scene especially jarring.

Instead of simply serving as another high-profile face in the crowd, Lee found himself in a visibly heated exchange before one of the most charged matchups on the Yankees ’ postseason calendar.

The situation appeared to end once stadium staff intervened and the other fan was removed. Still, the confrontation briefly became one of the biggest talking points surrounding Game 2 before the Yankees and Red Sox even took the field.
