Why Aaron Judge’s injury is the death sentence for the Yankees' championship hopes

New York passed a major test against the Red Sox, but the return of its superstar slugger could be the key to pushing the Yankees toward a deep postseason run.

T he New York Yankees made a statement last weekend by taking three of four games from the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Beyond the result itself, Aaron Boone’s club proved it can compete with one of the hottest teams in the American League , while Boston showed signs of wearing down as it awaits the return of several injured players.

The series was a true measuring stick for New York. Since late June, no team had been playing better than the Red Sox, whose resurgence began with a four-game sweep of the Yankees at Fenway Park . Had they repeated that performance in the Bronx, Boston would have taken over the top American League Wild Card spot .

With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the Yankees appear well positioned to secure a postseason berth, although catching the Tampa Bay Rays (83-55), leaders of the AL East, remains an uphill battle. New York (79-60) sits 4 1/2 games behind with just 23 games left to play, one fewer than Tampa Bay.

Amid that race, the best news for the Bronx Bombers could arrive very soon. Aaron Judge continues to recover from a stress fracture in one of his ribs, but he has already resumed hitting sessions using the Trajekt pitching machine without any setbacks, putting him on track to return in just over a week.

Aaron Judge could transform the Yankees' outlook

The return of the three-time MVP would provide an immediate boost to New York’s offense. Judge remains one of the most feared sluggers in Major League Baseball, and his presence in the heart of the lineup could once again make the Yankees legitimate contenders in the American League.

Still, the challenge will not be easy. The Rays have been the league’s most consistent team, led by Yandy Díaz , Jonathan Aranda , and Junior Caminero , the leading candidate for the American League MVP award after posting a .283/.369/.535 slash line with 37 home runs and 88 RBIs .

Tampa Bay also strengthened its roster by acquiring catcher Liam Hicks before the trade deadline, adding more depth to the lineup and greater stability behind the plate.

Even so, few players can match Judge’s impact. The slugger has averaged 52.5 home runs over the past four seasons, production capable of completely transforming any offense.

While awaiting his return, the Yankees have received strong contributions from Ben Rice, who leads the team with 35 home runs , along with Jazz Chisholm, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt . However, with Judge back in the lineup, New York could field a far more explosive offense heading into the postseason.
