Jesús Luzardo didn’t want to complicate Labor Day and made Phillies history

While thousands of fans enjoyed the holiday in Philadelphia, he decided to spend his afternoon in a much simpler way.

It was Labor Day, and Citizens Bank Park was packed as the Philadelphia Phillies faced the Atlanta Braves . More than 41,000 fans took advantage of the day off to enjoy some baseball, while both teams prepared for a game that, in principle, promised to be a long one. However, Jesús Luzardo seemed to have a different plan: not making things too complicated.

Atlanta managed just two hits, and Luzardo kept the opposing offense from finding a way to change the course of the game.

One run was all he needed

The problem for Philadelphia was that its own offense wasn’t finding much room either. The score remained 0-0 and, as the innings went by, every pitch from Luzardo made a small lead seem like it could be enough.

Then Kyle Schwarber appeared. In the bottom of the eighth inning, he hit a solo home run to break the tie and make it 1-0. One run . That was all Luzardo needed to try to finish the game himself.

He came back for the ninth inning with the crowd watching. Ha-Seong Kim hit a fly ball, but Ronald Acuña Jr. was hit by a pitch with two strikes, and suddenly the tying run was back on first base. Luzardo responded the way he had all afternoon: he struck out Drake Baldwin for his 12th strikeout and then got Ozzie Albies to fly out for the final out .

The first time he had done it in MLB

Luzardo finished all nine innings allowing just two hits, one walk and 12 strikeouts on 109 pitches, 78 of them for strikes . But the most important part was what he had just accomplished: the first shutout and complete game of his Major League career.

The performance also came in his 150th MLB start and allowed him to surpass 200 strikeouts for the season once again. His 2026 record improved to 14-5, while his ERA dropped to 2.87 .

For the Phillies, the 1-0 victory meant splitting the four-game series against Atlanta and gaining ground in the race for the National League East . For Luzardo, it was another demonstration of why he has become one of the most important arms in the rotation.

And while most people took advantage of Labor Day to rest, spend the afternoon at the ballpark and enjoy a day away from work, Jesús Luzardo found a pretty spectacular way to make sure his workday ended quickly .
