The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-0 on Wednesday and continue their push to secure a spot in the postseason.

With the team in the middle of a playoff race, every member of the organization is crucial, including the medical staff. However, one of the trainers came dangerously close to suffering a serious injury during the game.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mariners catcher Jhonny Pereda hit a hard foul ball toward the Phillies’ dugout, where coaches and trainers were standing.

The ball struck one of the trainer’s sunglasses directly and completely shattered them. Fortunately, the lenses absorbed the impact and prevented the ball from hitting his eyes.

The trainer involved was Christian Bermúde z, a Phillies assistant trainer since 2021 . He joined the organization from Triple-A Lehigh Valley , where he worked as a medical operations liaison.

Philadelphia secured the three-game series against Seattle with a 2-1 record and will begin a new road trip on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.

With the victory, the Phillies improved to 74-60 and remain four games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East . They are also just 2.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Wild Card race.

The team managed to turn its season around after a difficult 9-19 start. Following the arrival of Don Mattingly as manager, Philadelphia gained momentum before the All-Star break, although the team has experienced ups and downs during the second half of the schedule.

Now, the Phillies are looking to pick up the pace down the stretch and secure their return to October baseball.

Last season, Philadelphia won the National League East division title, but their championship hopes ended after they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers in four games during the Division Series.
