Arch Manning faces a career crossroads as 2027 NFL Draft outlook gets murkier

The quarterback entered the 2026 season with enormous expectations following a productive 2025 campaign

A rch Manning’s difficult season at Texas has sparked a new debate about his future: Rather than entering t he 2027 NFL Draft, should the highly touted quarterback leave the Longhorns and continue developing at another college program? E SPN analyst Dan Orlovsky believes that could be Manning’s best option.

Speaking Friday on First Take, Orlovsky argued that the quarterback needs a better environment to develop his skills, amid mounting criticism of his performances and questions about whether Texas could soon turn to backup KJ Lacey. “I do not believe Arch should go to the NFL,” Orlovsky said, according to Awful Announcing. “I believe Arch should leave Texas and go to a place that can adamantly develop him as a quarterback, that gives you the ability to play quarterback.”

Orlovsky also suggested Manning’s relationship with Texas could be nearing its breaking point, regardless of what happens in the Longhorns’ Saturday matchup against Ole Miss. “I think whatever happens this weekend, cool, I think this relationship is certainly done,” he said.

The comments add another layer to the uncertainty surrounding Manning. Once viewed as one of the leading quarterback prospects for the 2027 draft, the Texas signal-caller now faces questions about his performance, his place in the starting lineup and whether remaining in Austin is the best path toward an NFL career.

Texas tries to recover from consecutive losses

Manning entered the 2026 season with enormous expectations following a productive 2025 campaign. His performance this year, however, has fallen short of those standards. Entering the Ole Miss game, Manning had thrown for 1,295 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. In 2025, he finished with 3,163 passing yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The comparison has intensified scrutiny of both Manning and the Texas offense. Orlovsky has argued that the Longhorns’ system is limiting the quarterback’s ability to operate effectively and has contributed to what he sees as a regression.

That criticism comes as Texas tries to recover from consecutive losses to Oklahoma and Florida, each by a narrow margin. The Longhorns climbed to No. 1 in the AP Top 25 after defeating then-top-ranked Ohio State, but fell to No. 19 in the latest poll. The change in fortunes has increased the pressure on head coach Steve Sarkisian, whose handling of the quarterback position could become one of the defining storylines of the season.

Backup KJ Lacey adds to the uncertainty

Manning’s starting job has also come under scrutiny after ESPN reported that Lacey received additional first-team practice reps during the week. That development raised questions about whether Sarkisian might make a change if Manning struggles against Ole Miss. No confirmed decision to bench Manning was included in the available reporting, but the increased work for Lacey suggests the coaching staff is preparing for different possibilities.

A quarterback change would represent a dramatic turn for Manning, whose name and pedigree helped make him one of college football’s most closely watched players before the season began. It would not, however, automatically mean his time at Texas is over. Nor does Orlovsky’s recommendation establish that Manning intends to transfer.

Leaving the Longhorns remains a possibility raised by outside observers rather than a confirmed plan from the quarterback. Still, the combination of disappointing statistics, a potential competition for the starting job and questions about Texas’ offensive system has created a difficult situation for Manning to navigate.

Arch Manning under pressure as backup KJ Lacey’s footwork gets Texas fans talking

Arch Manning remains Texas’ starting quarterback, but the pressure surrounding the Longhorns’ struggling offense is intensifying ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Ole Miss. According to ESPN, Texas planned to give backup quarterback KJ Lacey Jr. an increased share of first-team repetitions during practice this week, a development that could leave the redshirt freshman better prepared to step in if Manning struggles again. Meanwhile, a resurfaced video showcasing Lacey’s footwork has fueled excitement among Texas fans eager to see what the young quarterback could bring to the offense. With the No. 19 Longhorns hosting No. 7 Ole Miss at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, the quarterback conversation has become one of the biggest storylines surrounding the game.
