Arch Manning is the quarterback Arizona desperately needs, and the timing could be perfect
The organization still lacks long-term certainty at the most important position in sports

A rch Manning is ready to begin the 2026 season with the Texas Longhorns as they face the underdog Texas State Bobcats Saturday afternoon. But before the kickoff, NFL evaluators are already looking ahead to the 2027 draft class. And in several early projections, one destination continues to surface: the Arizona Cardinals.
The connection is not difficult to understand. Manning enters the season as one of college football’s biggest stars and a leading Heisman Trophy candidate. More importantly, he possesses the combination of pedigree, physical tools, and developmental upside that NFL franchises covet in a potential franchise quarterback.
As a result, multiple mock drafts have already projected him near the top of the 2027 NFL Draft, with Arizona frequently identified as a logical landing spot. The Cardinals' interest in a quarterback would stem from a simple reality: the organization still lacks long-term certainty at the most important position in sports.
The projection is based on more than just the famous last name
Arizona officially closed the Kyler Murray era after moving on from the former No. 1 overall pick. Murray , once viewed as the face of the franchise, is now with the Minnesota Vikings after injuries and inconsistent team success ultimately led the Cardinals to reset their plans at quarterback.
While Arizona has assembled intriguing offensive pieces elsewhere on the roster, quarterback remains the biggest question facing the franchise moving forward. In ESPN draft analyst Jordan Reid’s early 2027 mock draft, the Cardinals were projected to select the Texas quarterback near the top of the first round.
Reid noted that Manning has the physical traits necessary to become a franchise quarterback if he continues developing and improves certain aspects of his game, particularly his accuracy on shorter throws. The projection is based on more than just the famous last name.
Manning’s development at Texas has steadily moved in the right direction. After spending time learning behind Quinn Ewers , he gained valuable experience as a starter and showed significant improvement as the season progressed. Over the second half of the year, he displayed better decision-making, improved mechanics, and greater confidence operating Steve Sarkisian’s offense.
The timing could also work perfectly for Arizona
The Cardinals have invested heavily in young offensive talent. A quarterback with Manning’s arm talent and ability to operate within a pro-style system could provide the organization with the centerpiece needed to maximize the rest of the roster. Early mock drafts envision Manning joining a young offensive core and helping establish a new era of Cardinals football.
What makes Manning especially attractive as a prospect is that he combines traditional pocket-passing skills with enough athleticism to extend plays. He is not simply living off the reputation of being Peyton and Eli Manning’s nephew. Scouts have consistently praised his size, arm strength, poise under pressure, and ability to make NFL-caliber throws from the pocket.
The expectations surrounding him at Texas reflect that reality. Entering the 2026 season, many analysts view Manning as one of the top contenders for college football’s biggest individual awards and a central reason why the Longhorns are considered legitimate national championship contenders.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has repeatedly praised the quarterback’s growth, while national observers see this season as a major opportunity for Manning to solidify himself as the top quarterback prospect in college football. Of course, there is still plenty of football to be played before the 2027 NFL Draft arrives. Manning must continue developing, Texas must navigate championship expectations, and Arizona's draft position remains unknown.
