B ill Belichick faced a difficult press conference on Monday, but avoided going into detail about the controversy surrounding his football program at North Carolina (UNC) .

For the first time, the legendary coach addressed questions about the recent departure of his former general manager Michael Lombard i and the indefinite medical leave of his son and defensive coordinator, Steve Belichick , amid an internal university investigation.

However, Belichick made it clear that his priority remains focused on the field.

“My focus is on getting the team ready to play [East Tennessee State],” Belichick said. “I’m not involved in any other part of the process. My job is to get the team ready to play this weekend and that’s what we’re going to do.”

UNC’s investigation began after a complaint was filed by a former member of the program’s front office. Lombardi, who was Belichick’s first major hire after arriving at the Tar Heels , resigned on September 3 after being placed on administrative leave on July 27 .

According to reports, both Lombardi and Steve Belichick have been questioned by attorneys regarding potential issues involving drug use and their alleged interactions with players . The younger Belichick has been away from his duties since early August .

When asked whether his program has remained compliant with established rules, Belichick gave a firm response: “Yeah, totally.”

The coach also confirmed that he has communicated with Lombardi since his resignation, although he chose not to reveal details of those conversations.

“In the end, we want to run the program in the very best way, and if there’s things we need to do to correct it, we’ll obviously do them,” Belichick said.

As part of the investigation, attorneys are also reviewing reports involving possible romantic relationships between recruiting staff members and players, as well as between assistant coaches and members of the recruiting department.

Investigators are collecting documents, screenshots of messages, and other evidence while examining the internal culture of the program under Belichick and Lombardi.

“The importance of the work that’s being done by the investigative team and, obviously, our high standard here of our code of conduct and doing things the right way and making sure that our student-athletes are given the utmost, the best treatment, the very best care, and the very best coaching that we can possibly give them. So that’s critically important to us,” Belichick said.

The Tar Heels began Belichick’s second season in charge with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Ireland on August 29 .

Now, North Carolina will return home to host East Tennessee State next Saturday.
