S teve Belichick 's resignation has added another major twist to Bill Belichick 's turbulent start at North Carolina , with questions now growing over the legendary coach's own future in Chapel Hill .

The Tar Heels announced on September 17 that Steve will resign as defensive coordinator effective October 27, following the conclusion of his medical leave. The move came alongside UNC 's announcement that its investigation had ended.

Steve had been on medical leave since August 6 as the university examined allegations connected to the football program linked to alleged drug use and other conduct within the program, although UNC did not identify specific individuals.

“The University has concluded a thorough and independent investigation,” UNC said in its statement. “Into allegations related to culture and climate within the Carolina football program.”

The school added: “The investigation determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct. The investigation also found that these actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.”

UNC also confirmed that former general manager Michael Lombardi resigned effective September 3, while Steve will depart after his medical leave concludes.

As per WRAL, the investigation included an interview with Bill , and that investigators conducted about 60 interviews while examining allegations involving the program, but the school has not specifically linked Steve or Lombardi to the investigation's findings.

The decision leaves important questions unanswered about the circumstances surrounding both departures and what they could mean for Bill – although UNC has not announced disciplinary action against the head coach.

Still, the departure of his son and Lombardi leaves him facing another major change less than two years into his North Carolina tenure and the college football insider Steven Godfrey suggested that the latest development could foreshadow a larger change.

“Everybody expects Bill Belichick and North Carolina to move on in the near future, and this is just another sign of that,” Godfrey said, but for now, Bill remains North Carolina's head coach, and the university has not indicated that his position is changing.

Who do the Tar Heels play next?

North Carolina has started the 2026 season 2-0, giving Bill 's team some momentum on the field despite the turmoil surrounding the program as the Tar Heels now face their first major test against the Clemson Tigers .

North Carolina routed the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 35-3 on September 12, with Billy Edwards throwing for 244 yards and Jelani Thurman leading the team with 71 receiving yards in a convincing home victory.

The Tar Heels ' defense also impressed, limiting ETSU to 255 total yards while forcing two turnovers and recording four sacks as Brian Belichick has handled defensive play-calling during Steve 's absence.

But Clemson represents a significant step up in competition as responded with a 22-7 victory over the Georgia Southern after they opened the season with a 51-10 loss to the LSU Tigers.

A strong performance at Clemson could give North Carolina an early statement in the ACC , a conference that includes the Miami Hurricanes . For now, the focus shifts back toward Bill ’s season, but for how much longer will he remain?
