Bill Belichick's drama at UNC and Jordon Hudson cost him his last chance to win without Tom Brady

Dan Le Batard believes Bill Belichick squandered his opportunity to prove he could build another winner away from Tom Brady

B ill Belichick was supposed to be writing a new chapter at North Carolina .

After spending more than two decades establishing himself as one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, Belichick made the surprising decision to leave the professional game and take over the Tar Heels program in December 2024.

It was supposed to be the opportunity to answer one of the most persistent questions surrounding his legacy: could Belichick build a championship-caliber team without Tom Brady ?

Instead, his first season in Chapel Hill produced a 4-8 record, and his second campaign has already been surrounded by considerable controversy away from the field.

That combination has led Dan Le Batard to argue that Belichick may have already wasted his final realistic opportunity to prove that his success in New England was not primarily dependent on Brady.

The longtime sports commentator delivered a blunt assessment of Belichick's situation, arguing that the coach himself, rather than Jordon Hudson or journalist Pablo Torre , was responsible for the position in which he now finds himself.

"What I'm sad about Belichick is he had a shot. He had a shot. He had a shot to get past not winning with Brady . And his shot got ruined by taking the North Carolina job. Jordon Hudson didn't do it. Pablo didn't do it. He did it to himself. And now it's done. There's no coming back. There's nothing he can do in his program,” he said on his radio show.

Le Batard 's argument comes at a particularly difficult moment for the UNC program.

Belichick's first season was already underwhelming. The Tar Heels finished 4-8 in 2025, including a 2-6 record in ACC play, and missed a bowl game.

The 2026 season began more positively, with North Carolina defeating TCU 15-10 in Dublin, but the program's off-field problems have continued to dominate the headlines.

The controversy surrounding Belichick has become bigger than football

One of the most visible sources of attention has been Belichick's relationship with Jordon Hudson , which became a national story even before the coach had established himself at UNC.

Hudson was repeatedly linked to the program and became a central figure in media coverage surrounding Belichick .

The controversy intensified after reports involving her role around the coach and UNC, while her public disputes with journalists, particularly Pablo Torre , added another layer of scrutiny.

Hudson and UNC have denied allegations concerning her involvement with the football program. The situation has made it difficult for Belichick to keep the focus solely on football.

Then came another major development involving Michael Lombardi, the general manager Belichick had brought into the program. Lombardi resigned on September 3 after being placed on paid administrative leave amid an investigation.

Reuters reported that the inquiry had expanded beyond the original complaint against Lombardi and included allegations involving other members of the football staff. Defensive coordinator Steve Belichick , Bill's son, was also on medical leave while an investigation was underway.

Bill Belichick has declined to directly address many of the allegations, instead emphasizing UNC's standards and its commitment to accountability. The coach has insisted that the university has supported the football program during the turmoil.

That creates an uncomfortable contrast with what Belichick presumably hoped to accomplish when he accepted the job.

His NFL résumé is essentially unmatched. Belichick won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots and built a dynasty that dominated the NFL for nearly two decades.

Yet much of that legacy remains inseparable from Brady , who was the quarterback for all six championship victories.

Belichick's move to college football therefore represented something much bigger than simply taking another coaching job.

It was a chance to prove that his football philosophy, leadership and organizational skills could produce success without Brady . So far, the evidence is mixed at best.

His 4-8 debut did little to silence the skeptics, while the current season has begun with a victory but also a growing cloud of distractions. Sports-Reference currently lists Belichick at 5-8 across his two seasons at North Carolina, including the 1-0 start to 2026.

That does not mean Belichick's story at UNC is necessarily finished. A strong 2026 season could change the narrative quickly. College football is increasingly volatile, and successful recruiting, player development and results on the field can reshape perceptions in a matter of months. But the margin for error is shrinking.

At 74, Belichick does not have the luxury of an unlimited rebuilding timeline. The longer UNC's off-field controversies dominate the conversation, the harder it becomes for the coach to establish the football culture he originally envisioned.

And that is ultimately what makes Le Batard 's argument so significant.

Belichick still has an opportunity to win games and potentially transform North Carolina into a legitimate ACC contender.

But if the Tar Heels fail to make meaningful progress, his move away from the NFL could become remembered less as a bold final challenge and more as the decision that prevented him from answering the Brady question on his own terms. For now, the 2026 season remains very much alive.

North Carolina has already shown it can surprise opponents, beating TCU in Ireland after being written off by many observers. But with investigations continuing and expectations rising, Belichick needs the Tar Heels to make their biggest statement where it matters most, on the field.
