Steve Belichick 's time at the University of North Carolina has come to an abrupt end after the school concluded an investigation into conduct involving the Tar Heels defensive coordinator. Belichick , the son of legendary football coach Bill , was hired as North Carolina 's defensive coordinator in December 2024 after previously holding the same position at Washington Huskies .

His arrival gave the Tar Heels another connection to his father, who took over as North Carolina 's head coach, but after a disappointing first season, Steve ’s future then became uncertain amid an investigation into alleged conduct involving drugs. Steve had been on medical leave since August 6 while the university examined the allegations, and reports indicated officials were investigating potential drug use while he was working, as well as accusations that he may have provided drugs to players. North Carolina has not publicly confirmed that Steve was the subject of the investigation, with former general manager Michael Lombardi also departing his position during the same period. The school announced that its investigation had concluded, saying certain actions demonstrated “a disregard for Carolina ’s values and standards of conduct.” “These actions were isolated in scope and not a systemic failure,” the University of North Carolina said. “All necessary corrective actions are now underway, and will be overseen by Carolina Athletics and the Office of University Counsel. “With these actions, the University considers the investigation to be resolved.” While Steve was away from the program, his brother Brian took over defensive play-calling duties. He is expected to continue handling those responsibilities following the departure.

Tar Heels demolish East Tennessee despite Steve Belichick saga

The developments surrounding Steve came as North Carolina opened the 2026 NCAA season 2-0 after dominating East Tennessee State Buccaneers 35-3 in its home opener on Saturday, September 12. Demon June powered the offense with three rushing touchdowns, while Billy Edwards threw for two scores in the first quarter as the Tar Heels quickly established control to impress their eight-time Super Bowl -winning coach. Edwards completed 15 of 20 passes for 244 yards while spreading the ball among eight receivers. Jelani Thurman led the team with 71 receiving yards, including a 24-yard catch-and-run that opened the scoring. And the defense was equally impressive despite the turmoil surrounding its coaching staff as North Carolina limited ETSU to 255 yards, forced two turnovers and recorded four sacks. Jaylen Harvey and Xavier Lewis each recorded two sacks as the Tar Heels extended their defensive streak to seven consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown to continue their strong start to the season. The Tar Heels will now face a much tougher test when they visit the Clemson Tigers on September 19 in the ACC.
