House of cards? Why Bill Belichick’s UNC tenure is predicted to collapse under weight of scandal
UNC’s latest scandal could put Belichick’s already fragile tenure on a collision course with an early exit

Bill Belichick’s second season at North Carolina has barely started, but his tenure is already facing a serious test away from the football field.
After opening the 2026 campaign with a 15-10 victory over TCU in Dublin, the Tar Heels appeared to have finally found some positive momentum. However, an expanding internal investigation has quickly changed the conversation surrounding the program.
The situation became more serious on Thursday when general manager Michael Lombardi resigned from his position. Lombardi had been placed on paid leave while the university investigated reported improprieties involving members of the football program.
UNC confirmed that the investigation is continuing and said it’ll consider appropriate action based on what investigators uncover.
Lombardi’s departure is significant because he was one of Belichick’s closest allies. The two previously worked together in Cleveland and later with the New England Patriots before reuniting in Chapel Hill. Lombardi had also been one of the central figures in Belichick’s transition from the NFL to college football.
The investigation reportedly covers several troubling allegations, including potential NIL violations, alleged drug use and claims involving inappropriate relationships between members of the football and recruiting staffs.
Investigators have reportedly questioned people about defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, Bill’s son, including allegations that he used drugs at UNC facilities or supplied drugs to at least one player.
Steve Belichick is currently on medical leave because of an undisclosed illness, and the allegations remain unproven. Investigators are also reportedly examining claims involving sexual relationships between recruiting personnel and players, as well as possible relationships involving assistant coaches.
A winning start may not save Belichick
The growing investigation comes at an especially difficult time for Bill Belichick . His first season at UNC ended with a disappointing 4-8 record, raising questions about whether one of the greatest NFL coaches ever could successfully rebuild a college program.
ESPN analyst Kevin Clark has now offered an especially bleak prediction. Speaking on First Take, Clark argued that North Carolina should regret hiring Belichick and suggested his tenure could end sooner rather than later.
That prediction might seem premature after just one game this season, but the controversy surrounding the program has made Belichick’s position increasingly uncomfortable.
His reputation was supposed to bring stability and credibility to UNC. Instead, the program has become the center of a growing collection of off-field headlines.
There have already been distractions surrounding Belichick’s personal life, while assistant coach Armond Hawkins was suspended last season over an allegation involving extra sideline passes.
Lombardi’s earlier ambition of turning UNC into something resembling an NFL operation also failed to produce immediate results, with the Tar Heels struggling throughout 2025.
The victory over TCU gives Belichick and UNC something to build on, but it won’t make the investigation disappear. With the university’s inquiry still underway and one of Belichick’s key allies now gone, the pressure is mounting.
The Tar Heels next face East Tennessee State on September 12.
