Former San Jose State offensive lineman Jelani Newman has died at 25 following a motorcycle crash, leaving his family, former teammates and coaches mourning a young man remembered for his football ability, kindness and strong personality.

Reports state that Newman was killed in a motorcycle accident on September 12, although some accounts have differed over the timing of the incident.

Details about where the crash occurred and what led to it haven't been publicly disclosed. No detailed police account has been released, meaning the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.

Newman's death was reported by multiple outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle. San Jose State's football program also paid tribute to its former player, sharing an image of Newman wearing his No. 72 jersey and offering condolences to his family.

The Arizona native had built an impressive football résumé before reaching the college level. At Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Newman became an important part of one of the state's successful programs.

Newman remembered for football and family

Newman was a two-time Arizona Interscholastic Association first-team All-Region 4A selection and earned first-team All-State honors as a senior in 2018.

That season, Saguaro finished 13-1 and captured the 4A state championship, with Newman playing a significant role along the offensive line.

His performances earned him an opportunity with San Jose State, where he signed in December 2018. Newman redshirted during his first college season before making his college debut in the 2020 Arizona Bowl.

He later appeared in all 12 games during the 2021 season and continued his football career with the Spartans through 2022.

Former Saguaro offensive line coach Mark Martinez remained close to Newman after his high school career. Martinez described him as a son and recalled spending time with him away from football, including family outings and fishing trips.

He also remembered Newman as someone who was deeply connected to the people around him.

Newman's grandmother, Nancy McGee Newman , shared a tribute describing the devastating impact his death has had on the family.

She explained that football had been part of Jelani's life from youth leagues through college and that his No. 72 jersey carried special meaning because it represented his sister and his birth month.

She also said Newman had plans to join the U.S. Army, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, and described his smile and laughter as unforgettable.

Following his death, Newman's friend Domenica Civitano created a GoFundMe campaign to help the family cover funeral and burial expenses.

The fundraiser has a $13,000 goal and was established as loved ones deal with the sudden financial responsibilities that accompany an unexpected death.

Funeral arrangements remain pending as family, friends, former teammates and members of the football community continue to remember Newman and the impact he made during his 25 years.
