Jen Belichick disputes reports surrounding Steve’s sudden North Carolina departure

UNC ended a wide-ranging football investigation without publicly tying Belichick to a specific finding

Steve Belichick ’s departure from North Carolina has left one major question hanging over the program: how much of the speculation surrounding his exit is actually true?

His wife, Jen Belichick , challenged parts of the public narrative after UNC announced Thursday that the 39-year-old defensive coordinator had resigned following a medical leave that began August 6.

“Unfortunately there is misinformation and speculation about our own situation,” she said in a statement.

She didn't identify which reports she believed were false, but her comments came as North Carolina released the findings of an internal investigation into the football program that examined a range of allegations involving drugs, relationships and possible NCAA issues.

UNC said the review “determined that certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct,” while also stressing that the conduct was “isolated in scope and not a systemic failure.”

The university didn't publicly tie Steve Belichick to a specific finding of misconduct.

Investigation was broader than Steve Belichick

Lead investigator Nate Huff , a former federal prosecutor, said more than 60 people were interviewed during a review that extended across the football operation.

“Our scope was broad, so we looked into a lot of stuff,” Huff told The Associated Press.

Reports had indicated that witnesses were questioned about potential drug use involving Belichick , but questions raised during an investigation are not the same as confirmed findings. Huff emphasized that the inquiry was not built around one person.

“This was not a circumstance where we were targeting any individual person or any specific people,” he said. “We were looking program-wide -- football program-wide.”

Former general manager Michael Lombardi also resigned during the wider investigation after previously being placed on paid administrative leave.

Jen Belichick centers health in response

Jen Belichick ’s statement focused less on the investigation itself and more on her husband’s well-being.

“Our priority will always be to show up with a healthy and strong mind for ourselves and our 5 children,” she said.

“We are humbled by the relationships that have been fostered here in North Carolina and would like to thank each and every person that has positively impacted our experience.”

She continued: “We believe prioritizing health as the most important thing you can do in this life and is invaluable compared to anything else.”

Steve Belichick joined North Carolina in 2025 to coach under his father, Bill Belichick , with his brother Brian also on staff. His resignation becomes official October 27 when his medical leave ends.

Brian Belichick has since been elevated to lead the defense. UNC has said it considers the investigation resolved, although school officials have left the door open to revisiting the matter if credible new information emerges.

Jen Belichick ’s statement doesn't fully explain what led to her husband’s departure, but it makes one thing clear: the family believes at least some of the claims surrounding Steve Belichick’s exit don't reflect the full story.
