Josh Hoover entered his first game with the Indiana Hoosiers with a clear mission: take control of an offense that had just lost Fernando Mendoza . However, his debut against North Texas took an entirely unexpected turn.

What happened to Josh Hoover during the game?

It all happened in the second quarter. Hoover dropped back to pass when North Texas defensive lineman Udoka Ezeani grabbed the bar of his helmet and pulled it so hard that it ended up twisting toward the back of his head.

The play left Hoover with a cut on his face, and he began to bleed. Broadcast cameras captured close-up shots of his blood-covered face .

And then came the question.

How did Hoover respond after being left covered in blood?

Hoover lined up behind center again and found his receiver Charlie Becker for a nine-yard pass that ended in a touchdown.

By then, blood had covered his face, jersey, pants and the chin area of his helmet. The image was impossible to ignore, but it was not enough to take the quarterback out of the game . On a day that was supposed to officially introduce Hoover as Indiana's new offensive leader, that scene ended up stealing the spotlight.

But behind that striking moment was much more than just an eye-catching image. Hoover did not get there by accident.

Who is Josh Hoover and why did Indiana bet on him?

A native of Rockwall, Texas, Hoover began attracting attention in high school, where he totaled 9,750 passing yards and 108 touchdowns . Although he originally committed to Indiana in 2021, he ultimately began his college career at TCU, where he spent four seasons.

In 2022, he served as Max Duggan's backup during the season in which the Horned Frogs reached the national championship game. Then, in October 2023, he got the opportunity to take over as the starter and eventually became one of TCU's leading passers. In his final season with the program, in 2025, he threw for 3,472 yards, 29 touchdowns and 13 interceptions .

And in his first game, Hoover made it clear that he did not need much time to make his presence felt.

Indiana went on to defeat North Texas 52-16 , with Hoover completing his debut with 231 passing yards and four touchdowns.
