Week 3 of the college football season is set to deliver one of the most anticipated matchups of the entire year. No. 7 LSU visiting No. 8 Ole Miss would already be considered a mouthwatering matchup from a pure football perspective, but the backstory is too good to be true.

Current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin spent six seasons at Ole Miss, turning the Rebels into one of the best teams in the nation, particularly in his final three seasons. The 2025 season was easily the best, as the team was 11-1 and set to make noise in the College Football Playoff . But then Kiffin left the team right before the CFP .

Kiffin accepted the LSU head coaching job on November 30 , leaving his Ole Miss players with an interim head coach for the most important stretch of the season. The Rebels did well without Kiffin, crushing 11th-seeded Tulane and taking down 3rd-seeded Georgia to reach the semifinals. They held strong against the Miami Hurricanes , but couldn't make it to the national championship game.

Ole Miss Rebels don't like Lane Kiffin, and he doesn't like them

Meanwhile, Kiffin was hard at work recruiting players - reportedly even some Ole Miss guys who were still playing - to join the Tigers for the 2026 season . Kiffin's actions, unsurprisingly, rubbed many at Ole Miss the wrong way. Kiffin apparently feels that they should be grateful for what he helped build, though.

According to Chris Low of On3 , Kiffin is taking the LSU-Ole Miss game as personally as the program he left is; perhaps even more so. He really wants to stick it to Ole Miss .

It sounds like Kiffin wants to win and win big. It wouldn't surprise anyone if he even tries to run up the score, assuming LSU is ahead if that opportunity arises.

Ole Miss hopes it doesn't come to that. Instead, the home crowd is expecting to make things very rowdy for Kiffin in his return to Oxford, Mississippi .
