Mike Norvell has one last chance to change his story at Florida State and the schedule won’t let up
The coach began the season under pressure, and several of the games still ahead could ultimately determine what happens to his future in Tallahassee.

Some seasons begin with excitement, while others start with an uncomfortable question. For Mike Norvell , 2026 falls into the second category. The Florida State coach enters the season after two losing campaigns with a clear task ahead of him: get the Seminoles back to looking like the team that, just a few years ago , seemed ready to dominate college football.
Mike Norvell knows what it’s like to be on top
Not long ago, the picture was completely different. In 2023, Norvell led Florida State to a perfect 13-0 regular season and won the ACC Championship , while also being named the conference’s Coach of the Year and receiving the Bobby Dodd Trophy.
That success also strengthened the university’s confidence in his program. Before the 2024 season, Florida State gave him an eight-year contract extension worth more than $84 million , keeping him under contract through 2031.
But then came a difficult fall. The Seminoles finished 2024 with a 2-10 record and closed 2025 at 5-7, missing a bowl game for the second consecutive year . The team that had gone undefeated during the regular season just months earlier was suddenly in need of answers.
2026 began and the pressure didn’t disappear
Norvell opened this season with a win over New Mexico State, but the celebration did not last long. Florida State then suffered a 27-24 home loss to SMU , once again putting the coach under the microscope.
With those results, his record at the helm of the Seminoles stood at 39-35 . And the schedule ahead doesn’t appear willing to give him much time to find answers.
Alabama, Miami, Clemson and Florida are waiting
Florida State still has several games capable of completely changing the conversation. On September 19, the Seminoles will visit Alabama, while later in the season they will face Miami and Clemson before closing the regular season against Florida on November 27 in Tallahassee .
Not all of those games will carry the same weight in the standings, but they could become a very visible measure of where the program stands. Winning important games could give Norvell some breathing room, while more losses would only increase the pressure surrounding his future.
And that is where another part of the problem cannot be ignored: Florida State does not have an easy way out if it decides to make a coaching change .
Every loss could make the problem bigger
Norvell’s contract includes a buyout that protects the coach if the university fires him without cause. During the 2026 season, that amount is around $51 million , while waiting until after the season would lower it to approximately $45.6 million .
The figure decreases over time because the agreement guarantees 85% of the salary and compensation that remains on the contract. That means the schedule matters for more than just the games: it could also influence the cost of any decision the university makes.
Meanwhile, Norvell is set to earn $10.3 million in 2026, with annual increases of $150,000 until reaching $11.05 million in 2031 .
