P.J. Fleck has built his reputation on relentless energy, but even by his standards, Minnesota ’s postgame scene at Washington was extraordinary.

Moments after the Golden Gophers secured a 27-24 road win, Fleck found linebacker Maverick Baranowski bleeding from the mouth after taking a cleat to the face on the final play.

He grabbed Baranowski by the head, pulled him in close and then wiped some of the blood across his own cheeks. “Blood brother,” Fleck said afterward.

The image immediately became one of the strangest visuals of the college football weekend, but to Baranowski , it was completely in character.

“He’s a crazy man,” Baranowski said. “It’s a great moment.”

Celebration reflected deeper relationship

Baranowski has spent all five years of his college career at Minnesota under Fleck , and his postgame comments made clear that their relationship extends beyond the field.

“Winning’s hard in the Big Ten, and when you get to win at a place like this, just so exciting and get to enjoy that with all my teammates and my head coach always having my back for the last five years,” he said.

“I love that guy more than anyone and an awesome opportunity to share that moment with him.”

Fleck later joked about the blood on his face and shirt. “Back in the day, I’m sure that’s what they did, the frontiersmen out West,” he said. “Little blood on there, I guess.”

Receiver Javon Tracy was less convinced he would ever join in. “I would never do that, but P.J., he’s different, man,” Tracy said. “Like, he’s crazy. He’s very energetic.”

Postgame celebration kept getting wilder

The blood-smearing moment was only the beginning. Fleck raced around the field hugging players and staff members, shouted toward the Minnesota fan section and then carried the same energy into the locker room.

There, his players lifted him into the air and crowd-surfed him near the ceiling while chanting, “Coach, coach, coach.” Fleck eventually arrived at his news conference still marked by the celebration and turned the attention back toward Baranowski’s performance.

“The kid loves the game, plays the game the right way,” Fleck said. “He is the heartbeat of our defense and our team.”

Baranowski backed that up with seven tackles, a sack and an interception.

Emotion came after statement Big Ten win

Minnesota improved to 3-1 with the victory, and the road result gave Fleck one of his most memorable celebrations in years.

The coach’s personality often draws attention, but Baranowski has previously described him as much more than an emotional sideline presence.

“I had a conversation with him a couple months ago about some personal stuff, and we talked for hours,” Baranowski said. “It had nothing to do with football. There’s not many people like that in this sport.”

That context helps explain why the postgame scene resonated inside the program. From the outside, it looked outrageous.

To Fleck and Baranowski , it was a moment of trust, adrenaline and a relationship built over five years.
