Nick Saban's stern warning about Lane Kiffin and college girls in Alabama

Accounts from former coaches and Tuscaloosa locals paint revealing picture of Kiffin’s off-field years

L ane Kiffin ’s Alabama tenure is remembered for helping modernize the Crimson Tide offense, but a new account suggests Nick Saban was also dealing with a very different issue away from the college football field.

College football insider John Talty ’s new book details a turbulent period in Kiffin ’s personal life while he served as Alabama’s offensive coordinator, including regular nights out in Tuscaloosa and concern among people around the program about where that lifestyle might lead.

According to an excerpt published by Vanity Fair, Kiffin ’s wife, Layla , and their children remained in California while he was in Tuscaloosa.

The book says that separation coincided with Kiffin becoming a familiar face at local bars. Eventually, those stories reportedly made their way to Saban .

“You’ve got to keep Lane away from the girls that are in college,” Saban told at least one staff member, according to a former Alabama coach quoted in the book. “Just keep him away from the sorority girls. Make sure they’ve graduated college or are working a job.”

The excerpt doesn't allege that Kiffin committed a crime or establish that he had inappropriate relationships with students. It instead presents the episode as a concern inside the program about his social behavior.

Tuscaloosa nightlife worried those around him

Talty ’s account describes Kiffin as increasingly active in the local bar scene.

One story claims an Alabama staffer had to retrieve a golf cart that Kiffin had left overnight at Innisfree Irish Pub. Former NFL quarterback Josh Booty also recalled hearing from bar co-owner Derick Purdy about Kiffin ’s nights out.

“Your boy Lane’s back in here asking where the hotties are,” Booty quoted Purdy as saying. “‘Can you introduce me to hotties?’” Another friend of Kiffin ’s from that period was quoted as saying he feared the coach was going to “drink himself to death.”

Trevor Hewett , who worked at a Tuscaloosa bar at the time, later summed up how remarkable it was that the situation never became a larger public scandal.

“The fact he made it out of Tuscaloosa without anything becoming super public is wild,” Hewett said.

Kiffin’s behavior damaged chances of replacing Saban

The most significant football consequence may have come later. Talty reports that multiple Alabama sources believed Kiffin ’s reputation in Tuscaloosa effectively ruled him out as a future successor to Saban .

“Multiple Alabama sources insisted that Kiffin’s behavior during his time in Tuscaloosa precluded him from ever succeeding Saban and becoming the Crimson Tide’s head coach,” the book states.

That is notable because Kiffin ’s on-field work at Alabama was widely praised. He helped reshape the offense during a period when the program was evolving beyond the conservative identity that had defined much of Saban’s early success.

Kiffin eventually left after the 2016 season before rebuilding his head-coaching career at Florida Atlantic and later Ole Miss . The new revelations add another layer to that chapter.

On the field, Kiffin was one of Saban ’s most important offensive hires. Off it, according to Talty’s reporting, Saban was apparently worried enough to issue a very specific warning.
