Pat McAfee's wife reveals the ESPN host's struggle to protect his family amid death threats
The ESPN host refuses to let online threats keep him from a special family moment

Pat McAfee’s weekend took him from the center of college football to a more personal role as a husband and father, with his wife Samantha offering a glimpse of the effort he made to spend time with their daughter despite a demanding schedule and renewed online hostility.
After ESPN’s College GameDay broadcast from Iowa City on October 3, McAfee had little downtime before his Monday Night Football commitments.
Still, Samantha wanted to take their daughter Kenzie to Disney World’s Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party. According to her Instagram story, McAfee told her he’d fly in for around 16 hours to make the family outing happen.
He followed through. Samantha shared that McAfee arrived and took Kenzie for a night swim, calling him the “best dad & husband.”
“I told him I wanted to take kenz to the NSSMHP and he said ‘I’ll fly in for like 16 hrs’ He arrived and took kenz on a night swim! Thank you for being the best dad & husband,” she wrote.
The moment was especially memorable for Samantha because she said she’d never seen her husband react that way to a Disney character before. The family has visited Disney World previously, with McAfee sharing a video in February showing Kenzie enjoying a hug with Winnie the Pooh.
However, their latest trip came against a much darker backdrop. On October 4, McAfee shared a hostile Instagram message apparently sparked by his commentary about Notre Dame on College GameDay.
The message contained a direct threat against McAfee and another member of his show, highlighting the disturbing abuse that can accompany his high-profile sports career.
McAfee continues putting family first despite the pressure
The threat wasn’t an isolated incident. McAfee has faced disturbing messages before, including an episode in September when an online commenter referenced the killing of Charlie Kirk while suggesting McAfee should suffer a similar fate.
Such incidents demonstrate the intensity of reactions that can follow the former NFL kicker’s outspoken opinions.
Despite that hostility, the weekend showed that McAfee hasn’t allowed online threats to completely dictate his life. Instead, he made the effort to travel to Disney World, spend time with Kenzie and then return to his professional commitments.
His Iowa appearance also generated controversy for another reason. During College GameDay, McAfee offered $1 million to student Finley Banfig and another $1 million to the University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital if she successfully made her field goal.
After Banfig missed, former Iowa tight end Dallas Clark was brought in and successfully threw a football through the uprights, resulting in $150,000 for both Banfig and the hospital. McAfee subsequently faced criticism over the reduced donation.
Rather than ignore the backlash, McAfee admitted that the criticism was fair. On October 5, he announced that he’d donate the full $1 million to the children's hospital, restoring the amount he had originally promised.
Between College GameDay, Monday Night Football, public criticism and threatening messages, McAfee’s schedule remains relentless, but Samantha’s account paints a different picture of the ESPN personality away from the cameras.
