The next Jordan Love plays for Miami with hopes of becoming the top quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft

Darian Mensah is not an NFL star yet, but his name is already starting to gain serious traction among the quarterbacks who could make an impact in the 2027 Draft . The Miami Hurricanes quarterback has even begun drawing a comparison that is hard to ignore: Jordan Love . And while he still has a long way to go, his physical traits, playing style and, above all, the way he has had to build his career make the connection quite compelling.

Why is Darian Mensah being compared to Jordan Love?

One of the strongest similarities appears even before either player reached college football. Mensah and Love were both born in California, stand around 6-foot-3 , and neither was considered a major prospect coming out of high school.

Darian was born in San Luis Obispo in 2005 and was rated as just a two-star recruit after his time at St. Joseph High School . His production during his senior year was enough to attract interest from Tulane, although that university ultimately became his only formal Division I FBS offer.

Love also had to take an unconventional path. Before becoming the quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, he received just one formal offer from an FBS program: Utah State . What happened afterward turned that initial lack of recognition into one of the most intriguing aspects of his career.

From Tulane to Duke the path that turned Mensah into a prospect

After spending 2023 as a redshirt, Mensah took over as Tulane's starter in 2024 and quickly began proving that the lack of recognition he received in high school said little about what he could do on the field.

In 13 games, he threw for 2,723 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions, numbers that helped Tulane finish with a 9-4 record and put the quarterback on the radar of more programs.

His next stop was Duke in 2025, and that is where his production increased even further. Mensah finished the season with 3,973 passing yards and 34 touchdowns , again with just six interceptions. He was also named to the Second-Team All-ACC and earned Sun Bowl MVP honors.

The jump was obvious. The player who had entered college football without being considered a major prospect now had a season behind him that was beginning to change expectations about his future.

Miami could be the stage that changes everything

In January 2026, Mensah committed to the Miami Hurricanes, taking another step in a career that seems to lead him to a bigger stage with every season . He is now Miami's QB1 and has an opportunity in front of him that could be decisive for his professional future.

The difference is the size of the opportunity. He no longer needs to simply prove that he can be a good college quarterback. At Miami, he will have to do it while the spotlight is on him, with two goals that could increase his value even further heading into the NFL: competing for the Heisman and leading the Hurricanes to the College Football Playoff.

That is where his name is beginning to enter a much more serious conversation.

Mensah is building his path toward becoming one of the Draft's top quarterbacks

Darian enters the 2026 season facing significant pressure, and for good reason. Recent NFL Drafts have shown that a great season can completely change a quarterback's value and turn him into one of the most coveted players of the next generation.

The most recent example is Fernando Mendoza, who entered the 2026 Draft after an extraordinary season with Indiana . Expectations were enormous after he won the national championship and the Heisman Trophy, a run that ultimately took him to the No. 1 overall pick by the Las Vegas Raiders .

Mensah is still a long way from that point, but his name is already beginning to appear in projections for the 2027 NFL Draft , with the added appeal of being compared to Jordan Love, one of the NFL's most established and efficient leaders as of September 2026. The Green Bay Packers quarterback enters the new season backed by a $220 million contract and a 2025 campaign in which he recorded 3,381 passing yards, 23 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 15 games, along with a 101.2 passer rating.

So now, all that remains is to see what Mensah can accomplish before reaching the Draft and whether his season with Miami will be enough to turn those comparisons into something real.
