Warren Sapp’s ugly umbrella clash flies in the face of Coach Prime’s values

The video appears to show Sapp kicking a man who tries to get under his umbrella

A video circulating on X shows Warren Sapp in a heated argument with a man in the rain. The man appears to step under Sapp’s umbrella without asking; Sapp pulls it away and then appears to kick him, turning the exchange into a physical confrontation. The post does not identify the man or show what happened before the recording began, so the full context remains unclear.

The stranger’s attempt to share the umbrella may have crossed a line, and Sapp had every right to say no. Still, the footage appears to show an unnecessarily aggressive response. He could have refused without kicking the man or escalating the confrontation. That reaction is likely to strike viewers as a poor example from someone whose recent job involved mentoring college players.

Sapp is no longer part of Coach Prime’s staff

Sapp spent two seasons at the University of Colorado under Deion Sanders. He joined the coaching staff in 2024 and was promoted to defensive pass-rush coordinator for the 2025 season. He resigned in February 2026, saying he planned to pursue other opportunities. Colorado thanked him for his work with the program and its student-athletes. He is not currently part of Colorado’s coaching staff.

At Colorado, Sapp spoke about teaching players life lessons and helping them become well-rounded young men. That makes the footage of the altercation especially jarring: it appears to run counter to the patience and judgment expected of a mentor. We don’t know what Sapp was thinking or what happened before the incident, but the moment invites criticism.

Sapp’s departure may also have been confused with another coaching change. Defensive coordinator Robert Livingston not Sapp left Colorado for a job with the Denver Broncos. The university said Sapp resigned to pursue other opportunities; no new coaching position was announced in coverage of his departure.

Warren Sapp remains one of the most accomplished defensive linemen in NFL history. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, he won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, was selected to the Pro Bowl seven times and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1999.

Those achievements are part of his legacy, as is the public criticism that follows when his behavior falls short of the example people expect from a coach and mentor.
