CJ Bailey had the win in his hands — then one mistake turned NC State’s victory into a nightmare.
N C State was seconds away from a signature upset over Vanderbilt on Saturday — until quarterback CJ Bailey turned a near-certain victory into one of the most painful losses in recent Wolfpack history.
With six seconds left and NC State leading 31-28 , Bailey took the snap from his own end zone. The plan was simple: take a safety, kill the clock, and walk away with the win. Giving up two points was acceptable. A turnover was not.
Then the unthinkable happened.
As Bailey tried to absorb contact and protect the ball, he lost control in the end zone. Vanderbilt recovered the fumble and returned it for a game-winning touchdown. What had been a 31-28 lead instantly became a stunning 35-31 defeat.
The collapse was almost statistically impossible. According to ESPN Insights, NC State had a 99.9% win probability before the fumble. Over the previous 20 seasons, teams leading with possession in the final 10 seconds of regulation were 1,046-1.
Bailey becomes the target of fan fury
Despite a solid individual performance — 275 yards and three touchdowns — Bailey’s final mistake erased everything that came before it. Social media erupted with criticism directed squarely at the quarterback.
“CJ Bailey should NEVER play another game in a State uniform. No coming back from this,” one fan wrote.
Another added: “I’d cut CJ Bailey and fire the entire coaching staff while they’re walking off the field. Unacceptable.”
Some called for Bailey to lose his starting job. Others demanded sweeping changes to the program after the heartbreaking loss.
Bailey had produced several strong moments throughout the afternoon. One catastrophic error, however, turned him into the face of one of the most agonizing defeats NC State has suffered in recent memory.
