A tense college football game produced an unexpected social media star Sunday night when an Ole Miss fan’s worried reaction was captured during the team’s thrilling season opener against Louisville.

The No. 9 Rebels and No. 24 Cardinals battled throughout their matchup at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, with neither team managing to build a comfortable lead.

Ole Miss appeared to have gained control late in the third quarter after quarterback Trinidad Chambliss connected with Deuce Alexander for a spectacular 62-yard touchdown.

Louisville responded almost immediately. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz answered with a 62-yard touchdown pass to Tre Richardson , and the Cardinals tied the game with a successful two-point conversion.

As Louisville celebrated, television cameras turned toward the stands and found a blonde Ole Miss supporter wearing the powder-blue color associated with the Rebels. Holding her phone above her head, she adjusted her hair before reacting to the dramatic turn of events.

At one point, she appeared to put her arms over her head in what fans recognized as the familiar “surrender cobra” pose. The camera stayed on her longer than a typical crowd shot, even zooming in before eventually returning to the action.

That brief moment was enough to send social media into a frenzy.

How Sara M. Smith became an overnight internet sensation

Sports accounts began reposting the clip, with one popular post praising the cameraman for apparently knowing exactly what viewers would want to see. The video quickly attracted hundreds of thousands of views, while commenters joked about the broadcaster’s decision to linger on the fan and praised her reaction.

Not long afterward, social media users began identifying the woman as Sara M. Smith, reportedly an Ole Miss alum. Photos and an Instagram account were circulated as evidence, although her identity hasn’t been independently confirmed by Smith , Ole Miss or the broadcast network.

While fans have enjoyed the harmless-looking crowd moment, others have questioned how quickly strangers online moved from noticing a person on television to searching for and sharing her identity.

The attention came without warning for Smith , as she wasn’t being interviewed, celebrating a touchdown or deliberately trying to attract cameras. She was simply watching her team play a remarkably close game.

Fortunately for the fan, the night ended exactly how an Ole Miss supporter would’ve wanted. After Louisville tied the contest, the Rebels eventually secured a 41-38 victory on Lucas Carneiro’s 48-yard field goal as time expired.

Chambliss and the Ole Miss offense helped produce the dramatic comeback, but for many viewers, the woman in the stands became an unexpected part of the story.
