Ian Patterson was a U.S. Air Force technical sergeant and experienced Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) instructor who had served for 15 years, who died after falling during a rope-descent demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas , before a college football game.

Patterson was assigned to the Air Force’s 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2 , and had been recognized for his work as an instructor – and in 2022, he was named the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year at the Headquarters Air Force level.

His role involved training personnel for demanding missions as TACP specialists work alongside Army and Marine units, helping coordinate air and artillery strikes from forward ground positions, where clear communication and rapid decisions can be critical.

Their training can include fast-rope descents from significant heights, a technique used to reach the ground quickly.

Patterson was taking part in a pregame demonstration intended to honor service members and veterans when the fatal accident occurred ahead of the UTSA Roadrunners and Navy Midshipmen game.

Air Force remember Ian Patterson after tragic death

Video recorded at the Alamodome showed Patterson descending from the stadium rafters in combat fatigues before appearing to lose control and striking the field. He fell near the 50-yard line as spectators watched, and a man quickly ran over to seek help.

Medical personnel treated Patterson on the field for about 10 minutes before he was moved away in a medical golf cart and taken to a local hospital. He later died from his injuries, according to information released by the Air Force .

He was one of four Air Force members participating in the UTSA Roadrunners ’ Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans ceremony ahead of the game against Navy . The incident delayed kickoff by around 10 minutes, but the teams eventually played.

UTSA won 38-34 and the American Conference said the game went ahead with the support of both teams and in accordance with conference bylaws.

Brigadier General Scott C. Mills , commander of the 57th Wing , said Patterson ’s service had meant a great deal to the unit and to those who knew him. He said the Air Force ’s immediate focus was supporting his family, loved ones and fellow airmen.

“Tech. Sgt. Patterson and his service mattered immensely to our wing,” Mills said. “And to the family, friends, and teammates who had the privilege of knowing and serving alongside him.

“Our team is now focused on standing beside Ian’s family, loved ones, and fellow Airmen as we navigate this profound loss together.”
